Change the filter at the same time, and use a decent branded filter, Halfords are fair.0

thank you all you fabulous people!!:)
15w/50 asda brand it is!
Trying to avoid all the confussion, from other Moneysavers.....
For YOUR car, at THIS age, the Asda 15/50 is fine!
It's an old engine, so you would not be doing it any favours, with lower numberd (higher spec) oils. In fact, it'd possibly harm it!!
As mentioned, if you're looking to change the oil, rather than just top up, you will need a filter & a good idea would be to change the drain plug, too. These won't be in Asda, so your local car parts store, or Halfords might be an option.
Or if you don't want to do the job yourself, tyre garages, like National Tyres, usually have offers for oil/filter done for you, for £15-£20.
Do a forum search & you'll soon see what I mean!!

Asda only sell 10w-40 or 20w-50. The 20w-50 is the cheapest but has no official ratings. I believe the Tesco cheap stuff is rated better than the Asda stuff. I don't think it really matters so long as it's changed every 5000 miles or so though.
This might be useful http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html0 -
id hazzard a guess a ford dealer will be competetive with halfords (unless you have the trade card )0

OMG, first I was going to use 10w/40, then 15w/50, then back to 10w/40, then ...:o No, I am not draining the oil, i'm just topping up as it is quite low now (preparing for winter etc.). I had no idea the 10w/40 could harm the engine; that's what I was afraid of. OK, so 15w/50 it is, I think:o0 -

Sorry if I've made it look like you'd harm the engine, with 10/40 - all it would do is cost you a few £$£$ more to buy it.
It's only when you use an oil with really low numbers (like 0/30 5/30] & described as synthetic, you might cause problems.
Without being technical, (or patronising0 these more expensive oils, are best for modern, cars, which have a low mileage & have had this specification in them all the time.Putting into older, higher mileagte engines, might 'clen the insides' too much, making any wear on the engine, more noticeable, noisey & use more oil!!
Yours would have started life, with 15/40 or 15/50, when it was new. It won't have any benefit, to buy anything other than supermarket brands, you mentioned.
If you do want a fairly simple guide, Halfords have booklets to look at in the shop, they show ALL cars listed, with the 'right' oils for them.
Hope I've not added more confussion again!!

if its just top up any clean engine oil will do ...its an old tech engine and you wont hurt it0

Topping up, any oil is fine, and providing it is listed in the handbook will mix with what's already in there. Is the oil on the dipstick fairly clean? I still prefer semi-synthetic for new and old engines, I have a P reg 106 diesel, a P reg Fiat Ducato diesel, and and 04 petrol Zafira, and they all get semi synthetic 10/40. All fairly high mileage.0

It would actually benefit the engine to change the oil,as opposed to topping it up,as you don't know what oil is already in.At least changing it,will eradicate that.
I'm sure if you lived near a MSE member that was competent, they may assist you in the oil change.
Just out of curiosity, what mileage is on the clock?
Ken.That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
10w40 will be a sythetic based oil and too thin for that age car...
Rubbish!
10W/40 is what is actually recommended in his manual:hi all, need to pick your brains. i have a P reg petrol ford fiesta. my manual says 10W/40 or 15W/50 as an oil lubricant. Is one better than the other?? Also, you know the 'cheap' stuff you get (Asda own brand etc.), is this ok to use when compared to Castrol etc, especially on a relatively old car like mine (I would think it mattered little). Thanks everyone.
