Mine looks like an LJU. It definately looks nothing like the NTE5. I don't have a microfilter plugged into the main box. Would that help any? I need to go to work but will check in again later this evening, thanks for all your help so far!

I have backtracked the phone line wiring and undone the face plate. It looks nothing like the above picture. The phone socket is in our hallway about 5ft up the wall. It then goes through the outside wall into the garage and there is an extension there (guy who previously owned the house had an office in part of the garage) it then runs down the wall and and has been put through a hole in the wall so it comes into the lounge. There are microfilters on the garage extension and one in the lounge. When I undid the face plate it looks like a small circuit board inside it but is definately not like the one in the above picture.

Do you have a master socket where the line enters the house? You only need the wires connected to terminals 2 & 5 to be wired. Any others can simply cause problems.

Extra ADSL filters will not help, they only need to be fitted to sockets that are in use. Which of the LJU pictures does it look like?

Not much point switching ISP, if the problem is in your own extension wiring!

Sorry not to get back to you before I have been at work until now.

I have taken some pics for you to look at and then hopefully it will give you a clearer idea. It is definately the main phone line.

OK the master socket is an older type but it's fine. The extension cable that goes outside though the garage and then back into your lounge looks dodgy though for ADSL.

If possible, move your Home Hub/PC etc. and plug it into the Master socket without the extension plugged in. See what happens to your speed then after giving it chance to build up. Also check the stats. with it plugged straight into the master.

Its the main cable that goes through the wall into the garage. There is a double socket on that line with a phone in the garage and then it goes into our lounge. I will try and plug the home hub into the main socket. How long will it take for the speed to change over as I will then have no home phone. There is also no plug socket in the hall so it means plugging it into the kitchen. Thanks for your help though, it is appreciated.

Well I was assuming that you had taken pictures of your master socket and that the orange/white wires are the BT line into the property.

What you really need to do is to plug your ADSL filter with your hub and phone connected into the first socket that the BT line connects to, with all other dodgy wiring disconnected. I had assumed that the wire going into the wall to the left of the socket was feeding the other extension sockets.

    ..................ADSL
    ..................Filter

It can take several days for the speed to build up in steps, although your router line stats should show an improvement, if it is your extension wiring that is causing your problems.

Well, I fiddled with the telephone extension in the garage which resulted in a loose connection in our wiring and then ended up with no internet from Friday at half nine until today. After checking with BT Broadband that there was no fault there end, which surprisingly only took 5 phone calls speaking to various people of indian ethnicity, they suggested it may be an internal wiring fault. Whilst ringing a telecomms engineer the phone conked out too. £165 later and my broadband is back on and the dodgy internal wiring no longer dodgy.

BT rang me this evening, they have offered me a new black hub on the option 1 package cause I hardly download anything, on a 12 month contract for £7.33 a month. Needless to save I caved in and took it.

Thanks for all your help though guys. I don't know if the connection I have is any quicker, I'm just happy it is on!!

Ouch! It's a pity that you have had to pay to correct the previous owners bodging. It may have been fine for phone/fax use but ADSL is a bit more fussy to get the best speed available from your line. Changing to another ISP however, would not have increased your speed due to the poor quality extension wiring.
