Changing to O2 from BT

Options
I want to change from BT to O2 for my broadband. Curretly I am paying £15.99 a month with them and after checking I only get these speeds. I have a BT phone line and pay them for my rental.

Speed Down1885.18 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )Speed Up241.55 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
I think this is pretty bad as I only live 1.6k away from the local exchange. I am not an O2 customer and although I'll only save a few quid I'm hoping I get faster speeds.
I am going to ring BT for my MAC code but do I have to return the BT home hub? I have had it for ages and have the first one that was released.

  • Going by those figures you could still be on a fixed 2 meg package, not adsl max.
Either that or something is very wrong with wiring internally or externally.
Get downstream attenuation, downstream noise margin and connection rates from your router - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php . Those can give an idea of what speeds you should be able to get.
Maybe worth haggling with BT once you know what your line is capable of.

Hi, thanks for your reply. This is what I get from the site you gave me.

    Downstream 2,272 Kbpsspacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gifUpstream 288 Kbpsspacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gifConnection time 44 days, 14:41:41 spacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gifData transmitted 89.70 MB spacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gifData received 480.89 MB

Hopefully this makes more sense to you than me! I have spoken to BT and requested my MAC code but they were very reluctant to give it to me I have to say. Apparently if I opted for a new hub and the same option at a reduced price than it would increase my download/upload speed as although I would have been on the same package name the package itself is different. They have said they will email it to me although I am not holding my breath!

You do not appear to be on fixed 2MB. Have you tried connecting to the BT master socket test socket to eliminate your internal wiring?

It may take some time for your speed to improve.

  • That's a fixed rate 2 meg package. If you can copy/paste the results that look like this

    Downstream 2576 Kbps
    Upstream 448 Kbps
    ADSL settings
    VPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
    Latency type Interleave
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 10.6 dB / 11.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 44.0 dB / 31.5 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 17.6 dBm / 12.2 dBm
    Loss of Framing (Local) 0
    Loss of Signal (Local) 0
    Loss of Power (Local) 0
    FEC Errors (Down/Up) 199 / 0
    CRC Errors (Down/Up) 1 / 2147480001
    HEC Errors (Down/Up) 1 / 0
    Error Seconds (Local) 1
we can tell from attenuation/margin stats what you should be getting on adslmax.

Surely a fixed rate 2MB would show 2048 kbps downstream and a maximum upstream of 256 kbps?

I have not done anything with the face plate. Our main bt line seems to be in our garage and there is a face plate there and in the lounge. I will maybe have a look and see what I can find.

On BTw lines those stats are spot on for 2 meg package. Info from Kitz's site and from recent personal experience when ISP was mucking about with my line.

Going by those figures you should have more spare downstream snr margin. On adslmax you should get near 8128 kbps with your downstream attenuation if wiring optimised.
As espresso said if at all possible get stats from test socket. Looks like your wiring is having an adverse affect.

Ok thanks. I will investigate the wiring at the weekend but I still think I will change over to O2 if I ever get the mac key.

I have backtracked the phone line wiring and undone the face plate. It looks nothing like the above picture. The phone socket is in our hallway about 5ft up the wall. It then goes through the outside wall into the garage and there is an extension there (guy who previously owned the house had an office in part of the garage) it then runs down the wall and and has been put through a hole in the wall so it comes into the lounge. There are microfilters on the garage extension and one in the lounge. When I undid the face plate it looks like a small circuit board inside it but is definately not like the one in the above picture.

Sounds very iffy all round - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btsockets.htm may help.
You might also want to check out how everything is filtered - http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html has examples at the bottom of the page.
