From memory that's true, although a lot of retailers may not be overly happy with you giving them your name/address as
    Gorden Brown
    10 Downing Street
    London

Totally agree with that. Gordon Brown isn't too popular with retailers since the recession started.

The whole TV Licence thing is becoming a total farce. I endured 12 months of threats from TV Licensing before a letter from my MP got rid of them.

According to the "Telegraph" a couple of days ago, the average fine for not having a licence is now £2.50 LESS than the cost of a licence for one year.

Details have to be taken and sent to the L.A. (Licensing Authority) for any TV Signal Receiving Equipment, so TVs, Set Top Boxes, VCRs, PVRs, DVD Recorders and Freeview adaptors for PCs. We don't collect details for DVD Players because they are only used for playing DVDs like you said.

Interesting. About 3 years ago while on holiday in Scotland, My Husband and I bought a DVD player (from Big W) and we had to fill out a form for the tv licensing.

Btw, its slightly off topic but we recently bought our first license (were living with family) and it is only for 11 months? Bought October 22 yet it ends September!

Happens with online retailers too, i bought a freeview usb tv for my FIL as he didn't have online access, then i got hounded with the TV License letters. We phoned them and told them it was for someone else and they asked for his address. We've also told them we don't have a tv, all they keep saying is they will send an officer round to verify it, we are still waiting 5 years on

Actually, it is ! Well, sort of. The BBC is State run, TVL is employed by the BBC to collect the lolly. There is no such organisation as TV Licensing Ltd, the correct name is Capita Business Services Ltd who operate under the name of TV Licensing.

Several years ago, the Chancellor of The Exchequer (forgotten his name now - he's moved on to screw up something else !) had the TV Licence classified as a tax. This meant that the money collected could be grouped under Gross Domestic Product - so if the TV Licence goes up, so does GDP, so the Government can claim the country is prospering - Damn' clever, eh ?
  • We have to ask for peoples addresses at work when we sell freeview boxes.. Im sure there is a possibility of a fine to us if we dont collect this.

Will have to check peoples addresses from now on :D
