I'm with S.Trent in a house with two persons occupying it.
Our 6 monthly bill is approx £50.

Good grief that's cheaper than ours! and we only wash once a week and go to the pub when we're thirsty! sorry just kidding :rotfl: but honestly anything much below £80 for 6 months is a miracle! let me know how you've managed it.
    Best regards

He doesn't say if he is metereed or not? There are some houses with an incredibly low RV.

If metered, the standing charges are approx £15 for 6 months, so in 6 months the 2 peaople have used approx 17 cubic metres between them; about 25% of average.

Or it could be estimated meter reading(previous reading) or a faulty meter!!

As dwigg mentions 6 monthly bills I assume he must be metered and unmetered water bills are as a rule invoiced annually. Agree older properties have amazingly low RV values - our first owned house in Sheffield was a 1998 terrace with mortgage(from the Townhall), water and rates all in one bill at a total of £60 a month! The Water board continually apologised for their bills being tied to the rising rates but things have not changed much since then. I was astounded to realise how much we saved when changing to metered water. We are currently on target (9 months in) to save £180 in our first year. Currently, on checking with my neighbour's unmetered bill he could be using 400 litres of metered water per day for the same cost!

  • we had our water bill on the 311208 we are in credit by 118.00 - we have tried to change our direct debit from 60.00 a month to 30.00 as we have had a water meter fitted back in july and their is only two of us living in this house.

we have called STW this evening and my husband as spent the past hour speaking with a customer service rep. to get the credit back into our bank and then the month direct debit decreased. Final STW have agreed to credit the amount back, but they will not decrease our monthly payments. So this time next year we would have the same argument when we are in credit again. 0845 number .05 per minute. Costs to much so we have asked STW to take us off DD and change to 6 month bill, we loose the benefit of discount for direct debit but considering we will save at least £100.00 next year it is worth it.

be firm but put your needs across, allways be polite at the end of the day companies such as these want your money. Why should your yearly credit sit in their bank earning them money when it can sit in yours and earn you money (even if at the moment savings are not doing too well) they will improve

Sounds like you were unlucky getting their worst CS rep. I've had 2 refunds that were received within 10 days plus they reduced my DD's well below what I would have expected. If you get another rep like that just close the call and ring back then you most probably will get someone who knows what they're doing.

You do not get a discount for having a direct debit with Severn trent.
I agree with Vinr you must have got threw to a absolute wazock, I Dont know one person who would sit on the phone for one hour refusing you a refund you insisted on having (Loosing there bonus while doing so).
If you want to PM me your details i will take a look when i get in tommorow.

You are getting confused with gas/electricity accounts I think.

Gas/Electricity companies give you credit terms. Water companies don't!

As you have taken yourself off Direct Debit(and you get no discount for Direct Debit) you will now have to pay your water bill 6 months in advance. - in April and Oct.

So instead of the money for DD sitting in your bank, it will now be sitting in Severn Trent's coffers.

So in cancelling of the DD you have got exactly the opposite of what you set out to achieve!

"Took careful aim and shot himself in the foot" comes to mind!;)

    Yes, we're metered.

The £50 per 6 months does not include sewerage costs - they're handled by Anglian water, so are on top of the £50.
Apart from that I did some experiments (don't ask!) to see how much water needs to be in the cistern for a good flush without being excessive, and adjusted the ball-thing to suit.

We use the washing machine twice per week as we don't have kids.
Shower every day instead of baths, and the shower isn't a power shower.
In the summer I use water butts for watering the garden.

We don't scrimp on water / energy, but I really don't like any sort of waste, so I s'pose you could say we're 'careful' instead.
