Honestly - tell me how painful childbirth is!

  • I've not read the posts so forgive me if I'm repeating anyone else. My answer to this question is that childbirth is not nearly so painful as never having children.

Consider the obvious - if it were too painful to bare, why would so many women have more than one child? They can't all just be careless :D
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

I ended up having to go 100 miles (by sea and land) to a big hospital, to be induced. Did not work, so ended up with elective c-section. Getting the spinal in and walking into theatre was a tad scary! There was a lot of scar pain afterward, although nothing that would put me off for life! Worst thing was not being able to drive for 6 weeks. Cannot comment on labour, other than to say I imagine a long labour followed by a section would wipe your strength a lot. This said having bubs to enjoy makes it all fade away!
    Good luck.

i will be honest - nothing prepared me for birth of dd - i asked my mum, how painful is it, she said like doing a big poo - well its nothing like that beieve me,
    -
-i work in maternity and think we should be more honest about the pain you will /may experience during childbirth - saying its like a big poo does help when your pg, not during labour-

-i have to say its a pain you can work with a bit, after that your body will take over and baby will be born - best day of your life - THAT i can promise you x

  • i gave birth naturally and it didnt hurt as much as i thought it would. I went in thinking it'd be the worse pain ever and do you know - given the choice of being pregnant for 9 months or give birth, id pick giving birth lol. Most painful bit was when i had stitch because i'd torn - they tried to give me gas and air but i didnt like it so gritted my teeth thinking "youve just iven birth, few stitches are nothing!" lol

Looking back I don't think I could have 'organised' my daughter's birth any better. I went in for a check up about 2 weeks before the due date. I'd already decided in my head that chances are the birth would be 2 weeks after the due date. The consultant took one look at me and decided that I was having her that day.

I didn't get any time to think about it...it just happened. Never got to the 'worried about labour' stage. I did ask for an epidural and for a while it was heaven...or on one side anyway. Then they fiddled with it...so it stopped working completely. So they called the lady back who declared that I was fully dilated so that was it. At that point they put they put the gas and air out of my reach.

So I wanted the lot, but got nothing. To be honest I can't remember anything about the pain. I know it hurt lots because I remember saying to my OH that I had changed my mind about having a babe....he laughed and said it might be a bit too late.

All I can remember is my little girl. I didn't understand what people meant when they said you forget the pain....now I do understand. It all becomes secondary after you see that little bundle.

I'm terrible with pain...and hate embarassing situations. And showing all your bits to all and sundry is embarassing....but I didn't care. Still don't. Labour is horrible. But afterwards when your little monster starts to smile, gurgle, crawl, walk, talk, run, and get into all sorts of trouble you quickly realise that for this special little person you'd go through it all again. I never wanted kids...but I wouldn't swap her for anything.

She was worth every last second of pregnancy, labour and sleepless nights. Quickly worked that out when we nearly lost her.

  • after 5 children I can tell you , you jolly well can push and suck gas at the same time. The midwife soon gave up trying to get it off me.

At the time I didn't have the brains inside me to scream to have it back! It was baby brain syndrome.

No matter how many stories you hear you will never be truly prepared.

My labours couldn't have been more different!
DD1: Epidural, I felt absolutely nothing but it meant I didn't know when to push, the midwives had to tell me. In the end I was brought into theatre for an emergency c section but they decided to do a trial of forceps first. She came out, bruised and still has a scar under her right eye, I was a mess. When it came to no. 2 I insisted on having no forceps written in my notes and had a meeting with my consultant about it.
DD2: Because of the no forceps rule they told me to try to hold off on an epidural. So I was fortunate enough to be there on a quiet day so I got to use the birthing pool and gas and air - absolute heaven! But I relaxed too much and stopped dilating! So they got me out, it got painful and I demanded an epidural, again because it was so quiet I got one right away, but it didn't take at all. The mw didn't check to see if it had and insisted I didn't need the gas and air anymore, I refused to take it out of my mouth so she disconnected the mouthpiece from the tube - just as I was delivering. So I swung off my dh hair and out she came.

Despite having to feel the pain I would go through it without pain relief before I ever go for an epidural again.
