    Hi AlwaysHappy,

I've had some success in the past with supermarket stuff but it can be a bit hit and miss. I used to be able to get some good seed bargains from health food shops but haven't sprouted properly for a while. I managed to buy a new sprouter (unused and in box) from the car boot the other week for £1 so I am starting again.

    I've ordered these

I was hoping they would turn up today but they didn't so a bit too early to give you any feed back - sorry!
I was looking at these too so would be interested to hear how you get along with them. Thanks

Try growing pea shoots. Buy a packet of Whitworths dried marrow fat peas (the sort you soak and cook in soups), fill a large shallow tray ( cat litter size) with a small amount of compost and cover the compost with the dried peas and a sprinkling of compost. Keep well watered until the peas germinate. You can cut the shoots when they are a few inches tall and they are delicious in salads. When you have used them all up ( don't let the shoots get too tall and wiry)' just pull them up and resow again in the same compost. Using these dried grocery peas is far,far cheaper than using the packets of peas you buy in garden centres and the taste is exactly the same.
Brilliant idea thanks, I love pea shoots, they are so tasty. Will add a pack to my shopping list.

  • It`s green Mung beans for bean sprouts.
Alfalfa seeds sprout Alfalfa - also very nice, but more salady, thinner than beansprouts.
I`ve not done any sprouting for years, but used to buy the stuff from supermarket wholefood section.

Sunflower seeds can be sprouted too - a handful in an old icecream tub and rinse gently and drain twice a day is how I have done it.

If you check out the ethnic aisles in the supermarket there are lots of rich pickings for sprouting.

Mung Dal - little bitty green beans grow into beansprouts like you use in Chinese food. If you want then juicy and white then you need to sprout them in the dark.

Whole Channa dal - yellow peas - lovely sweet sprouts.

Marrowfat peas - can be soaked and sprouted .............. or sown in compost to make bean shoots.

Green Lentils - lovely peppery sprouts - a handful on a salad is gorgeous.

Chick peas - soaked and sprouted till the shoot just appears are so sweet you can eat them like sweeties.

Some herb seeds can also be sprouted - I have done coriander and fenugreek in the past.

I have seen packs of sprouting seeds in Garden Centres and on seed racks in DIY stores. some large packs contain a few varieties but one favourite is often sold on its own. its Mung beans or Chinese beansprouts. simplicity itself to grow - I just get a large glass jar or vase, add seeds and water and put muslin or a fine cotton hanky over the top and fasten with an elastic band (this is to stop insects or such falling in and contaminating the beans. each day shake the jar and empty the water out and refill. after a week or so you will get crisp delish bean sprouts.

I'm glad I found this thread, lots of advice on here and I just started a jar of mung-bean sprouts off :j I'd also like to give it a go with the chickpeas that are lounging around in my cupboard. Has anyone had successful results with marrowfat peas sprouted in a jar?
