Its sad to see woolies go, the problem is that Woolies is something people remember from their Childhoods but hardly anyone actually shopped there in recent years. Nostalgia doesn't pay wages.

If only the company's management had been as good at retailing as the administrators have turned out to be ....
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Not hard to liquidate stock cheap. Not much of a long term strategy though...

  • Let us not forget about C&A. The same sort of hoohah surrounded their closure but the high street moved on and new retailers took their place.

Yes, but it sounds like they have packed the stores with customers, without giving that much discount. Like I said ....

But only because much of the British public are not too bright and equate a closing down sale with bargains like vultures round a carcass. But without pausing to consider whether what they're buying is actually a bargain.

However the same thing applies, a closing down sale doesn't really work well as a long term strategy... ;)

    And Littlewoods
  • The store was packed today when I went but very few people were actually buying. Everyone was muttering that the prices were still too high and it was pointless. I didnt spend long in there - although some shelves appeared to be empty the stuff that was there was overpriced junk really.

I love Woolies, they are an institution - literally.

However, they did seem to have a perpetual identity crisis. My local Woolies has rearranged its products so many times over the past few years and at one point had a pharmacy/photo processing section at the back. That lasted all of about 6 months. I think they wanted to be EVERYTHING to everyone (a Boots/Mothercare/Tesco rolled into one) rather than finding their own niche and sticking too it which they originally did and which is why its so sad to see them go. I expect that an umpteenth expensive coffee shop or organic deli will take its place knowing the local area .

As a kid, my mother made me walk 2 miles to Woolies to buy broken biscuits. I thought I'd tell you.
