Would you consider emigrating if the recession gets really bad here in the UK?

For it to be brighter, the place they came from had to be 'darker' in their opinion.

Should german jews have said, oh doom and gloom, but I'll stay and see what happens because I don't want to be thought of as running away - oh, that's what did happen and look what happened...

I hope that you'll forgive me if I correct you on that one point. In fact, between 1933 and 1939 roughly two-thirds of the German Jewish population emigrated.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • All this talk of how Bad Great Britain is becomes a little tiresome. This is one of the greatest places in the world to live. While I'd like to visit somewhere sunny for the winter months, good old England will always be my home and where my heart is.

The grass really is not greener.

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.

Agree. I think a lot of the people who are moaning about the UK and stating that they are leaving are the ones who haven't travelled that widely. If they had then they would see that actually, they're blessed in the UK.

My point about people running away from thir problems has been a little misunderstood. People who are leaving the UK because they have better employment prospects or because they are sporty/outdoorsy types and feel that their lifestyle is better suited to living in Australia or in Canada (for winter sports) or for any other positive reason is one thing, and they should be able to integrate very successfully. They're leaving for positive reasons and feel the country they're going to will give them a much improved life.

People who are leaving this country because they feel the government is crap or because the economy is being missmanaged or because the weather is crap are simply negative people who won't integrate very well and will soon find new things to moan about in their new country. They're leaving for negative reasons and feel the country they are going to will not be as bad as the one they're leaving.

Hope this helps. I'm not against emigration per-say, I even considered going to Canada myself because I love skiing and winter sports (not much snow in England and no mountains to speak of) and there is a lot of demand for what I do (SAP HR & Payroll). I just feel that in order to really integrate and be happy in your new home, you have to be looking forward to the New World with optimism, not looking back at the Old Country with unhappiness.

  • Well said Dithering Dad,

I am in agreement with you. If you are moving to another country there is no point in being bitter about the one you have left. I want to move to Northern Spain because of the laid back lifestyle, but am not moving until I have a job that will allow me to have a good standard of life there. When I go, I won't be negative about the UK, or Ireland (where I am from). I just feel more at home in Spain and love the language and culture.

As I said in a previous post, I think the UK and Ireland both have a lot to offer & if I never get to fulfill my dream I will be happy here!

Its nice to see some people want to stay on the B ark.
  • This thread reminds me of those really boring people at work constantly moaning about how much they hate their jobs - despite the fact they take their wages from there for 40 odd years and do nothing to get off their lazy backsides to do anything about it.

If you dont like something - make a change.

If you dont like this country - pack your bags and go.

I'll happily wave you off at the airport so i can live in an even Greater Britain.
  • I have a slightly different view as I grew up elsewhere and moved to London for work about 6-7 years ago. When I came here the energy and excitement of being in "the City" was palpable. Everyone seemed as though they were working in the greatest city in the world. There was still a little bit of the excitement of the early New Labour years left and Iraq, credit crunch etc were all years away.

Today, what can I say. The cloud has truly descended and people seem to be grimly plugging away even though they don't see a good future on the horizon. I am still working and earning a good living, and have settled in with a mortgage, constant friends and a lovely wife. However more and more of my friends from abroad (Oz, Asia, US and so on) have either left or started making plans to move back. ONe of them made the comment that "The UK is talking itself to death" and the pessimism is really getting to her. Funnily enough, she likes the weather here (so do I - better for my asthma than the heat and humidity in the tropics).

Would I re-emigrate (ie., go back home?) Probably. I am at the point where I am not confident my kids would have a better future in Britain than back home. This generation (mine) is already worse off than the irresponsible boomers who spent their kids' future earnings on cack.

My family (I have 5 siblings) think I'm crazy, as every time they visit me here they fall in love with London more and more. However it's getting to be a "nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live here" sort of thing. We shall see what the next year brings.
