Thanks for all your responses. i still have not managed to get it from the garage, but DIY might be the way to go.

If the garage suspected it was a head gasket failure, all they should have done initially was a compression test that would have cost no more than an hour to complete,(5 mins actually). It would not have been absolutely conclusive but the results would have told them if the engine needs taking down oor not. To be honest you have a fair case as it sounds to me as though they wanted the car in bits to force your hand.

See if others agree with me, if so tell them that another garage has advised that they have done unneccesaary work without your approval, provided of course you didn't give it. Or let them repair it if you don't have a cheaper option.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I couldn’t afford that repair anyway, so it would be finding a cheaper garage or DIY. Thanks for that, I think their hourly labour is £35, so I’ll not expect to pay for more than 1 hour of time.

You could be in for a fight here if your not careful and they might not let you remove the car.

Phoned the garage and my car has still not been put back together. They have told me that there are 2 hours labour to pay for which I said I was unhappy about as I felt 1 hour would have been enough to diagnose the problem.

I think they expected me to go ahead after hearing the quote so had started to strip it down ready for repair. I also wonder if they are telling me about these costs so that it is in my interest to leave it with them and let them repair it. I am fuming now, as I could be starting to get some work done on it and I am at their mercy for getting my car back.

To be fair, you should expect to pay some money for diagnostics.

I mean, if my central heating failed and i called out an engineer,he spent an hour diagnosing, proclaimed that my waffle valve was dodgy and it would cost £150 to fix, it would be wrong of me to say,oh well,on your way my good man. I cant afford it/I'll fix it myself and I wont pay you anything.

Do you know anyone else who will repair your motor properly and get some kind of guarantee on it? Are they a good reliable garage?

    IMHO you can;

    (1) Fight with them and maybe pay £35 plus the cost of recovering your still useless car

    (2) fight with them and not get your car back because they want £70 and they will then possibly start adding storage charges

    (3) Give them the £70 notes and take your car back and then !!!!!! around trying to get someone to do it cheaper

    (4) Try and negotiate a price with the garage and get the job done

    (5) Evaluate the current value of the car when it was working. If it isnt worth repairing, bin it and get the bus.

Sometimes people resent giving skilled workers money for work done because there is this underlying often erroneous feeling that their labour isnt worth that much, that you can get it cheaper or that they are ripping you off.

When you saying you are "fuming" and that you could be "starting to get some work done on it"..do you have someone to do the work? Are they any good? How much will they charge? Will they guarantee their work for some time? How long will it take?

Dont forget, your engine bits are going to have to go off to an engineering workshop to be worked on. The garage won't do it in house. They will have to pay out money on your behalf to get your bits engineered.

Well it depends on what the original problem was. I am assuming that the garage will identify that and fix it too.
You know what assuming does... ;)

    (3) Give them the £70 notes and take your car back and then !!!!!! around trying to get someone to do it cheaper They want over £100, 2 hours labour at £35 + VAT and the recovery of £35 +VAT.

    (4) Try and negotiate a price with the garage and get the job done

    (5) Evaluate the current value of the car when it was working. If it isnt worth repairing, bin it and get the bus. This is a likely option, I'd still like them to give me my car back in a timely manner though. I told them on Tuesday I wasn't paying for the repair and it still isn't ready for collection.

I expect to have to pay, but I think they are coming it, and have done more than was necessary as they assumed I'd pay for the repair.

I appreciate all the input though it helps me to get some perspective on it.

Ask your friend/garage reasonable times to dismantle an engine to evaluate head damage and reinstate the engine.

Then claim £105 + Vat for that and recovery is unreasonable.
