taking it away from the garage just means additional costs in getting it away from the garage and then getting it to another if you decide to repair it.
fix it,run it for a while and then flog it for something better....work permit granted!0 -

I didn't ask the garage to do anything except recover it and give me a quote for fixing it. When I got the quote I said it was too much for me right now and I just wanted to bring it home. When I went to pick it up they had it in parts.
I wanted to know if I should expect to pay for anything more than the recovery. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0 -

you should have said, just recover the car and have a vague guess at whats wrong then.
to diagnose a fault a bit of work has to be done sometimes.
they shouldnt have had to totally dismantle the engine but they should have at least carried out a few tests, which equal time, that in turn equals money im afraid....work permit granted!0 -
im guessing its a 1.1/1.2 engine?
fairly easy DIY repair
ensure new head bolts are used and the head is skimmed
i can give you a couple of links on DIY'ing if you are interested then PM me0 -
They did say when they rescued the car that it was possibly the head gasket as it is a common problem with these cars. (They hadn't lifted the bonnet at that point).
Doesn't every garage say that as that what they said to me (and it wasn't)
Im sure that's part of their training!0
