Isnt there a good chance of the head going again though?
Not in the near future if the headgasket replacement job is done properly - unless of course there's a known problem with the engine like the k-series rovers.

A skim will help the current problem, but if the original problem isnt fixed it will just happen again...

  • taking it away from the garage just means additional costs in getting it away from the garage and then getting it to another if you decide to repair it.

fix it,run it for a while and then flog it for something better.

Well it depends on what the original problem was. I am assuming that the garage will identify that and fix it too.

I didn't ask the garage to do anything except recover it and give me a quote for fixing it. When I got the quote I said it was too much for me right now and I just wanted to bring it home. When I went to pick it up they had it in parts.
I wanted to know if I should expect to pay for anything more than the recovery.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

you should have said, just recover the car and have a vague guess at whats wrong then.
to diagnose a fault a bit of work has to be done sometimes.
they shouldnt have had to totally dismantle the engine but they should have at least carried out a few tests, which equal time, that in turn equals money im afraid.

They did say when they rescued the car that it was possibly the head gasket as it is a common problem with these cars. (They hadn't lifted the bonnet at that point).

Doesn't every garage say that as that what they said to me (and it wasn't)

Im sure that's part of their training!
