You can steam frozen veggies, you don't have to boil them :)

I live on my own and grow my own veg at the bottom of my garden, however sometimes a whole Cabbage etc is too big to eat in one week and i end up throwing half away. What Veg can be frozen and this may sound strange but how do i freeze it?, Do i boil it then freeze it?, or just freeze after i have washed it ?

Was thinking of maybe next year make up some mixed bags of veg and freezing them, then just get one out each day to save waste.

Any experience on this would be great !:j

    Hello,

I've done a search for this and not found an obvious answer- many apols if I've missed it!

My question: I want to freeze spare fruit and veg (specifically today apples and pears that are about to "go" but I will need for a crumble next week).
Can I freeze them? should I stew them first ? how?

I know that for most veg you need to blanch then freeze... any help on the fruit front?

    THANKS

    x
  • If you know that you are going to use them for baking, I would certainly stew first. Then you can't really go wrong. I'm sure there will be a way to freeze the raw fruit, if it's only short term, I would just bung it in, but then that's just me.

I've been given about 12 bottles of wine that have been stored in someone's garage for years. It was from my parents neighbours having house-clearance where the hoarders had died. I couldn't say no - it would have been rude! Now I've had a chance to look they dates between 1998 to 2002 dates on the bottles  A mixture of red, white and rose. Looks like medium-priced supermarket stuff. Shall just I get rid and stick the empties in the bottle bank? Seems such a shame as it's alcohol and should keep really.

It should all be fine - just check there's no advice to the contrary on the label and sniff it to check before drinking (which you would anyway?).

If there's any that you're not keen on you could always freeze the rest of that particular bottle in ice cube trays to use in cooking maybe.
  • This might help. http://www.wineloverspage.com/cgi-bin/quest/ga.cgi?q=18

There's only one way to find out if it's okay! I agree about freezing it in portions for cooking if it's not great for drinking but not rank either.

I am ridiculously proud of myself having blanched a cauli and a head of brocolli! :rolleyes2 But I can't remember how to freeze them. Is it on a tray? Will they stick to it? (it's non-stick, but...)
