  • the firm i was working for went bust, and my commute has gone from 70 miles a day to 2:)

my old landy is more than capable of doing that.

my brothers borrowing it for the time being, and i may struggle to get it back from him, its only costing him 6 quid a week to get him to work and back all week ;)
  • Are you serious?!!

  • about what???
  • bangernomics is ok if you have half an idea about cars, and if you are happy to run a car without a working electric window.
the best bet is to find a basic car,no electric windows,no automatic gearbox, nothing too fancy usually things like that are expensive to repair if you dont know what you are doing. and older cars will break occasionally, its part of the fun. its just knowing when to cut your losses sometimes.

what you have spent on your car so far including the purchase is the same amount as i paid per year for a brand new ford focus 5 years ago.

if your back is giving you trouble then fixing some things on the car will probably not be the best idea, you will spend sometime in uncomfortable positions.
but for simple things that are easily accesible then theres no harm in having a go.

  • About selling it on? Especially if it's doing as well as you say  Must admit I am severely tempted - feeling a tad stupid about spending so much on my car which may well be the lemon of the year  Am kicking myself for not finding this area sooner, wondering how I can get myself out of this 'motoring' hole without digging myself further in...

Yeah, I can see how it would work for someone with even basic mechanic knowledge. I guess I don't have the confidence that I would be able to do it safely...

Whether or not it's time to cut my losses is definitely what's running through my head...

Excuse me while I sob quietly in a corner :cry::o

I may well ask for a Haynes manual as my Christmas pressie from the kids - just need to decide whether it's for the car I have, or whether I cut my losses and see about a different one..

Thanks to everyone for their advice/suggestions.

  • it all depends on my brother at the moment to be honest. i'd much rather keep it in the family. its not the best motor in the world, but its reliable and cheap as chips to run.

it has all the bells and whistles lpg system fitted, and that makes it cheap as hell to run, lpg is 37ppl. and the car returns 35-42 mpg on gas. My commute was 35 miles each way, pure motorway and i drive at 60mpg behind a lorry listening to audio books... sad that i am.

If i do sell it on ill give you a knock if you like.

if it was me in your situation i would run the car,get my moneys worth from what you have already spent, dont fix items that arent really necessary, but at the same time keep it roadworthy and legal. the next time something fails on it get a quick quote to fix it,or even ask on here for some advise describing the problem acurately,we sometimes get it right and can advise best repair method. if its going to cost too much to fix it then sell it for spares and move on.
