    1. £750 for a service....eek. But hopefully that covered most things.

    That was my hope - the clutch was a shocker though!

    2. £100 for a window motor.....OP you really should haver gone to the scrappy for that.

    I did - got it off 247spares - the price from the dealer was double that, and it included fitting. :)

    I agree with LandyAndy you must have put an awful lot right with the car and really should try and get a year or two out of it now. If you can manage that then it won't have been too bad a buy. Sell it now and wou will probably only get say £500+/-.

    Think I'm going to have to run it until I am sorted with the £500 due to me, and also know what my rental situation is.

    Having said all that I bouyght a heap of junk a number of years ago for £1100 and spent about £2,000 over a period of months justifying each additional expense as "Well I've done everything else so what more can go wrong". Eventually decided to have the cambelt replaced on the Saturday and wrote it off on the Monday...was gutted but also had a big sigh of relief as the millstone was lifted from me.

    Oooh, now that must have hurt!! :eek:

    Keep your fingers crossed and give the car a chance....good luck.

    Thanks

    I agree with that, get rid of the Rover, they are notorious for being unreliable.

    Get a good Jap Car that has been cared for, they can be found, be prepared to pay a bit over the odds for a really good one, you will never look back.;)

    Have been doing a look around for Skoda Fabia/Felicia as have heard good things about them..... :)

    They are solid, only really improving in the last 6/7 years though and doubt you'll get one that new for £500 though!

    So do you reckon it's worth doing a mechanics course then?? I have two slipped discs so getting up and down can be a problem (mobility can seriously suck on a bad day :( ) but would definitely be interested in being able to repair a few things myself.

    I was put off it by a friend who said most cars are so computer orientated these days that I still wouldn't be able to do any of the fixings myself, but if I am entering Bangerdom then maybe I should look into it....

    A window motor is three bolts, no course required, but if you've got back issues it's not worth it as for most repairs you'd either need a ramp to get the car up to workable level so you're not stooping, or you'll be working on the floor a lot, neither ideal for back issues.

    Taking a contrary view to most on here, I bought a Rover 600 (1997R, the 2.0 petrol version) from the car auction a couple of years ago, ran it for 18 months, and sold it for £750 - a £200 profit.

    I did 27,000 miles in the car while I had it, and the only expenses were a new battery (£40) and a tin of radweld to fix a pinhole leak in the radiator. The local MG Rover dealer did the servicing for £115 fixed price all in.

    These cars are really nice to drive, with much more luxury than you get on the modern Japanese aternatives, and my advice would be to stick with it for as long as you can.

    I only sold mine because I needed an estate car for work, so I've now got an 05 MG ZT-T, which I really like as well.

    I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

    Hi - this is my first time posting over here, but have enjoyed reading lots of threads lately. :)

    I bought a 1997 R reg Rover 600, diesel last September for £795. Since then, the following has occurred:

    * £750 - full service, which revealed brake fluid had drained away, so front discs, etc;
    * £100 - motor for driver's side window. Still not quite fixed but can't afford to buy guides at the moment;
    * £245 - clutch cylinder

    You have been robbed absolutely blind. Even with the most major service and replacing all the brake components, it wouldn't be a £750.

    £20 for a motor from the scrappies - an hours labour to fit. I know because mine went on my 620.

    Clutch cylinder is £50 for master, £30 TOPS for slave plus an hours fitting.

    Bangernomics works really well as long as you don't then go to the most expensive garage you can find when it goes wrong.
  • Japenese is the way to go for your budget.

    Rover 600 = Honda Accord.

    HTH.
