Carol as much as they are for the middle class people who will get housing benefit in rented.
I am not one for trying to stick familys in tempory accomdation (also more expensive) rented or owner.
You just have a problem with home owners, middle class renters will get simlar help if not as spectacular to you.
No, I have a problem with homeowners who overstretched themselves but then refuse to sell up and downsize somewhere they can actually afford.
Much as if I rented a property costing more than I could afford and then refused to move out when I found out I couldn't, but expected the taxpayers to pay for my choice - even if I'd chosen a £400K house as a single person, say. For 2 years!
This sounds like a bribe to me - I'm with the author of the article.
Still, glad your 'joke' is over, so we can now discuss the point of the article, rather than some (invented) class warfare.0 -

Clearly what upsets you most however is that it might just prop house prices up a bit.
You do seem to have a complete inability to accept that its clearly not the only area where middle class people benefit from the welfare state.
No, I don't think it will. I do, however, think that was the intention, and, particularly in a recession, I don't feel that the public coffers are sufficiently full to enable us to waste money on such a hare-brained scheme.
I have to admit I find the class warfare stuff irrelevant and dull - of course poor people have it harder - hardly news.
Can you start your own class warfare thread to discuss it, please?0 -
Which 'arithmetic'? Margaret Beckett's?
Yes, well I don't find that hard to believe.
Where does Kenny point this out, BTW?
Way back!

Unfortunately the figures don't really add up.
If its going to cost £1bn and only help 9000 people then that suggests they are getting £111k in this mortgage interest deferal.
Even if we assume that all those people had £400k mortgages and did nothing for 2 years you can't get anywhere near £1bn.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

That has put them in their place :rotfl:'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. Thanks. Yes, well as I said, that's Margaret Beckett's arithmetic for you. Enough said.
Until the details are thrashed out and published, we can't really know exactly how much money they're planning to waste. £1 billion or £100 million - it still sounds like too much (ie any) to me.0 -
I agree with the principle that keeping people in their homes is better than the cycle of repossession, eviction, auction, social housing. I see a good idea that has been turned into a short term popularity/vote catching exercise funded by the tax-payer.
As 100's billions of tax payers money has gone into the banking system already, I see no reason why the banks should not be forced to finance this with those funds.0 -

I think it is a good idea in some cases but not necessarily all, for people with little or no equity on a hopelessly unrealistic mortgage for the future then perhaps it is not? My fear for many is that a situation is prolonged when inappropriate.0 -
As much as benefits are fiddled (I had the uneviable position of working front line in a benefits office) by the 'underclass' or 'scum' or 'disenfranchised' (choose your own term) , we never see posts from the outraged concerning the amount of tax that is for want of a better word fiddled.
I hate posting links btw (false creedance and all that) but this does make interesting reading.

The percentages of cases leading to prosecution for tax fiddling or benefit cheating are actually quite similar (for my sins I used to work for a benefits fraud team and it was and no doubt remains nigh on impossible to get a case to court) - i.e. cheats do prosper regardless of 'class' or more likely lack of it."An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".
!!!!!! is all that about?0
