Drive 'em both and make your mind up. I've had both S and X types (currently have an S-Type R....nice) and for me the S is more of a "real" Jag than the X. If you must have an X, get a 2.5 or 3.0 as it'll be AWD - a front wheel drive Jag isn't a Jag in my view - and have 6 cylinders which is the minimum a Jag should have.
Reliability - have done cumulative approx 200k in mine, and only non-wear & tear item was paid for by Jag even though out of warranty. Main dealer servicing is no more expensive than the wife's Peugeot.
A diesel S-Type's out of your budget, which is a shame because it's a real cracker...but the petrol's aren't too bad. That said, might be worth stretching as the diesel will hold its value better.
Advice on S-Type - make sure you get a facelift (2002-on) model...you can tell by the growler being part of the grill on the facelift rather than an enamel one on the bonnet on the original. The pre-2002 is ok, but the newer one is what Jaguar wanted to build in the first place but weren't allowed to as the Ford-bosses wanted it out of the door a year early. Main differences are nicer dash, better handling and, most importantly, new auto gearbox. The pre-2002 is a crappy Ford unit which is a bit ponderous and has a reputation for failing at 80k - the post-2002's a 6 speed that's as smooth as silk.
Racing Green's the colour to go for, but note I presume you mean Jaguar Racing Green rather than British - they do both, but Jaguar's metallic, British is solid.
As for Audis and BMWs...p-lease, too clinical. And Japanese...well very reliable but you'll die of boredom.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
Just in case you fancied it, Jaguar Racing Green, is NOT the 'green' you'll see on the race track!!
The colour used there is TOTALLY different, 'cos the original shade didn't show up well, on camera!!

Thanks for the tip, do you know how i tell the 03 on model of the x-type please?0 -
Look at the two numbers after the first two letters on it's reg number
Don't think there was too many external tweeks apart from the boot release button was moved.
SE's got their spec upped as did the Sport, wich seems to be callled an 'S' on the V5...0 -

Have found S-Type 2003 Jag Racing Green 2.5 SE for £4K with 74k miles and full Jag SH, last service 72k and a new gearbox and torque converter last year. Has been under warranty and is for month or so, sounds good eh?0
