Phones4U Problem!

Has anyone bought the Nokia N85 from Phones4U? I'm having an absolute nightmare with them! I'll try and explain this as best as I can, it's a slightly complicated situation.

I ordered the handset from them last Tuesday over the phone. Because I was under 18 at the time (I was meant to be getting the phone as a 18th birthday/Christmas present) everything had to be done in my dad's name. When he'd finished speaking to them he told me they said it'd take four to five days to arrive. I'd forgot to mention to him that they promise 'next day delivery' so he didn't question it at the time but we just thought "fair enough, there's nothing we can do about it" and we waited. Saturday (my birthday) came and it was still not here. We decided to give it till Monday and if it still hadn't arrived then we'd ring them up. I waited all morning today but still, nothing. I rang them this afternoon and they said we'd failed the credit check. I rang my dad (who's working away at the moment) and told him this. He said that's simply not possible, there's X thousand pounds in there so I gave him the customer service number and he said he'd ring when he'd finished working. He rang them up and they told him he hadn't failed the credit check after all, and said something about them not being able to offer that handset/not able to send it to our Post Code, he sounded pretty confused about it. He told me he asked to speak to someone higher up but they refused.

I'm stuck in a rut over what to do. I don't want to settle for another handset, neither do I want to buy sim free. However, I'm going away this weekend and NEED a new phone by then. I apologise if this isn't really the right place to post this but I can't really think of anywhere else to ask.

Could someone PLEASE give me some advice!

  • The only thing I would suggest is go into the store to sort it. Having thousands in the bank doesn't automatically say you will pass a credit check, it has nothing to do with Phones4U who fails and who passes, it is up to each network individually. The 4-5 day delivery could be because the phone isn't in stock, I have never heard of any company not being able to send it to the post code that was credit checked. Not much advice other than to go in store to sort it.

Thanks for the reply SweetPea23. I'm sure it didn't fail the credit check though, they confirmed it with him when he rang up himself. Unfortunately going into the store won't help - it's an online/over the phone only deal. I've asked questions about the online shop in store before and have been told they're run completely seperately and there's nothing they can say/do.

I just don't understand why they say they can't offer that deal. They said they could do it if I chose a cheaper handset but it's clearly advertised on the website as a deal for that handset and has been for over a month. On the two occasions I rang the sales hotline (the first time I couldn't complete the order because my dad wasn't present), neither sales rep queried the offer at all and were more than happy to process it.
  • Now you are 18, have you thought about applying again under your name?

I need at least a Maestro card and at present I only have a Solo. By the time I got one, there's little chance of me getting the phone before 2009, let alone this weekend (which is when I need it by ideally).

    Thanks for the reply though.

Ahhh i didn't realise it was exclusive to online, they are right when they say its run seperately, silly i know but its 2 seperate parts of P4U. Have you tried applying online rather than over the phone?
  • Also dependant on network they will fail someone who has just turned 18 :( rubbish I know.

Thanks again for the replies SweetPea23. I just ordered it again, this time online using my mum's name. Will probably ring up tomorrow (or get my mum to seeing as they refuse to speak to anyone but the account holder!) to check up on it. Would have been nice to have been compensated for all the hassle and inconvenience in some way or other but starting a fresh should hopefully be quicker.

I hope you get it sorted and you get your new phone quickly.
  • On a supplementary note, I'm looking to do the same thing as only Phones4U have the N85 in the UK at the moment. Does anyone know if there's any difference in your rights in the future, or how you handle your phone compared to signing up normally with the network provider, for example Orange?

I'm just worried that I'll go to Phones4U and do the upgrade on Orange, with my same contract, get the phone and something'll go wrong and I'll be bounced between the two of them.

    Thanks.

Thanks SweetPea23. The second order went through fine. What went wrong with the first one I don't know. I'd advise anyone else wanting to order from Phones4U to order via their website rather than over the phone; it's a lot less hassle.
