TMK....We have had to make the same decision....DD2 will be going to secondary school next September. She is Extremely Bright and is and always has been top of the class for everything and was made Gifted and Talented a few weeks ago in Maths and English.
Reece, Bryn and Lou ( she is there at moment ) all went to school round corner but it has fell below in the last couple of years. There was threat of closure and the parents fought really hard a few weeks ago to keep it open...It now has a couple of years grace to see what happens. We left it entirely to Lauren where she would like to go. I would have loved her to try for A school by us called The Academy...It's an exam pass school but i know she would have wizzed through it. She didnt want to go there though and wanted to go where her sister is..There was also the thought that John has the car for work so she would have to walk and I dont feel we live in a safe enough worls for my kids to walk to and from school in the dark. Finally I have put her down for the school round the corner. You know my motto is that I have been pretty lucky and all my kids very bright..Reece went there and stayed on in 6th form for A Levels and now has his B A Honours. Louanne has come home with report last weeks with A's in Art, Drama and PE. So if they want to learn they will...You could end up sending her to one quite a distance from you and then she may have problems there, as its not guarenteed our kids wont have anything happen...Its been one of the hardest decisions we ever had to make....I just hope we made the right one.;)Best Competition Wins-Brand New Vauxhall Corsa & £30000 -

hmm thats a point - over here there were pupils left without a school, they literally had to take what was offered, some had to be home schooled.
My youngest sister has to travel an extra 20miles a day because the school nearest didn't have a place for her - although her friends are at this school and I am nearby so she can stay with me or come to mine after school if she wants to meet any friends etcJo x2007:£5181.09 2008: £6619.70 2009: £4284.49 2010: £5213.14 2011: £4980.62 2012: £3188.52

tmk - This is a bit of a sore subject with us - schools
big ds went to the local school and it was crap, at the time we were living on an estate and used to always be calling the police, had every window smashed in our house by the neighbours kids, house covered in eggs most days etc etc, he got bullied etc, then in his last year we moved to a lovely little village mainly populated by old people who are lovely, anyway when it was dd's time to choose schools there was no way I was sending her to the catchment school that ds went to as i knew she would get bullied and hate it, i applied for a school outside the catchemtn area and just got in.
Downside it cost a couple of grand a year in bus fares which we should pay monthly but have let it go for a year or so and owe them a few grand:eek:
other downside is most of her friends live miles away so she doesent get to see them at night or weekends
upside is- always getting letters from the school saying what a pleasure to teach she is and how well she is doing
she didnt know many people when she started the school but now has a wide network of friends and there is always msn at night and weekends can go to nearby town with her mates
and the best bit is she loves it:D

wow ~ again thanks everyone
Is such a massive step that'll affect the rest of her life. It wasn't such a hard choice with my eldest 2. eldest def wanted to go to the good school and quite a few of his mates were getting in and DS2 was having a really hard time from kids that were going onto catchment school so it was an easy choice to send him to the same one as his brother. He has thrived at that school and gets terrific reports and merit referrals. But she's a different kettle of fish. She doesn't try and thinks she'll morph into Hannah Montana when she turns 15
