  • Happy New Year everyone!

I'm doing a lot of thinking lately about what goals I want to set for myself this year. I know my main one is to get rid of all my non-loan debt which would currently total £5,289.33.

Would be great if I could get rid of it by my birthday in June - if my classes go well it would be very easy but if they didn't then not sure where I'd find the extra cash.

My goals after this would then be to save up to settle my loans and get my emergency fund of £5,000 (includes 3x my monthly employed wage and then about £1500 which would cover a few months of freelance earnings).

Did another geeky spreadsheet today! Woohoo - my first of 2009!

I did a results page of my December spending diary and showed the percentages as a pie chart. I spent the most on Christmas which wasn't a surprise.

Mainly I'm really proud of myself for not forgetting about my diary after 2 weeks - I stuck to it to the very end of the month. This is a breakthrough for me! On with January's!

  • Hi, happy new year to you too. Well done for keeping up your diary, I'm sure it will make 2009 much more productive and stress free for you.

I'm sooo jealous about the geeky spreadsheets and pie charts :o I so wish I knew how to do these and could be a geek along with you :p I would be totally nerdy if I knew how to do them...in fact do you know how I could teach myself or were I could go to learn??

Anyway well done again and I look forward to reading your updates even if I don't post much I will be reading :D
  • Do you have any experience with Excel or Word? All I've done is work with it on a personal level really - I did a course called ECDL and you cover the basics in that.

I would say if your familiar with MS Word then you can pretty much fumble your way around Excel (that's all I do!). It's just knowing where to look for the help. I use the formula wizard and chart wizard - I wouldn't have a clue how to do them without this!

If you want a copy of my spending diary sending I'd be happy to email you it!

Hey iwtbf :) Hope you won't mind me mentioning that Open Office (https://www.openoffice.org) is almost identical to Excel and is free to boot :money:

I'm currently the proud owner of a 'I :heart2: spreadsheets' mug thanks to my oh so witty GF, so I certainly appreciate how useful they can be for some smart money management.

If you decide to try and stick to the getting rid of your non loan debt by June I'll happily race you - my debts currently stand at ~£4500 tho, so I don't want to be accused of an unfair headstart :D I'll let you pay back £700 and then try challenging you again :rotfl:

Did you come up with anything creative and MSE to do at work?
  • Have to say I've never used OpenOffice myself - its just that I'm familiar with MS programs through my office job and on the plus side I can do my geeky spreadsheets when I'm bored at work!

That mug sounds awesome lol! Spreadsheets rock!

I am definitely going to stick to my goal of paying them off by June - I picked June as its my birthday and it would be nice to have a birthday where I've got a bit more financial freedom - plus it would be a wicked birthday present knowing its all gone!

I'll happily take part in that race - no worries that you have a head start - you never know I might still beat you lol!

I didn't come up with anything to do at work but hopefully when I go back on Monday it should be much busier now that the holidays are over!

I've been delivering leaflets for my fitness classes until I'm sick of seeing them this week! Hopefully my classes should be really busy this week - please god!!!!! I've got a June target to meet lol!
