Actually Mitchaa is sort of talking sense (shock horror! The shenanigans from yesterday have turned my mind!), he is in the sort of financial status that I was at the beginning of the last recession. Plenty of pennies coming in, sales going on all around us and we were feeling no pain whatsoever...in fact, we couldn't work out why everyone was acting all the end is nigh like.

    Then disaster struck.......

Also Mitchaa, very sensible to purchase a year old car instead of buying new...I would do the same thing.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Actually times have changed in this respect. At our most recent pay rise in October (in my University anyway) we knew we were going to get 3.5% rise or a rise equivalent to September RPI- whichever was higher. RPI in September was 5% making a very nice, inflation linked rise for all categories of staff in this particular University, at least.

Also, salaries across the HE sector (after recent pay settlements) are much more generous than previously, and approaching equivalence to the private sector.

What I meant was, if inflation soars to something crazy like 20% pa...the previous years increase just gets swallowed up throughout the year.
We have got used to relatively low inflation (apart from house prices) for many years.

OH's dad was a policeman back then, mother an auxiliary nurse in NHS . They had to sell their house and move into police accomodation for a few years as their wages just couldn't keep up.

No drivers, we all starve to death

I can go on and on and on and on and on and on............;)

Lots of jobs are recession proof ;)

My OH is a HGV driver and was made redundant last week. In the area where we live there is very little in the way of posts to be had - the odd day here and there, yes, but nothing regular.

I am a teacher and while I have a job, there are very few vacancies. Plus supply work is very limited as schools can now use teaching assistants to cover classes and do that as it works out cheaper for the school.

Army....I'm a Tank Commander (Challenger 2 and CVR/T) been doing it for 17ish years now.....the best 17 years of my life and I wouldn't swap it for anything;)

I wanted to add...I'm very proud to be a Soldier, Very loyal to my Queen and deep down love my country....I just don't like the idiots that run it sometimes

My grandfather was a tank driver, but as his was a 2nd World War tank, I think it needed jump-starting (-:

mitchea i am surprised you are so happy because i used to live in Aberdeen (bridge of don...little England) and its the most grayish depressing city i have ever had the pleasure to live and work in..so hats of for you to be able to smile while living there..The place is one step away from disaster relying on the oil industry...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I know my Grandad felt he was almost married to his tank - he and the rest of the crew slept under or next to it, ate there, drove in it, etc. When he was in the Middle East (Jerusalem and Damascus, at different times) he was in barracks, but for the whole invasion of Italy, his tank was home, workplace, lesiure (!) activity, etc.

Now I'm not going to tell all of my secrets but I never forgot what my dad told me when i joined "anyone can be uncomfortable" and I've stuck by that ever since

Lets just say I've seen a TV, a shower those air beds people have and there's enough room inside a tank to hold many crates of beer...nice and cold to...You make the best of a bad thing, its something soldiers are very good at. Especially tank soldiers

People may think there are lots of 'bargains' at the moment but only because we've been conned previously. How comes they were able to knock £200 off a washing machine overnight without much hesitation? The same goes for many items, retailers able to knock silly amounts off because they made silly amounts in the first place.

There will have to be a process of Wealth realignment and I think it's just begun.

I believe this too. Altho I dont think its going to be a clean cut thing. China and India and other countries have some uphill struggles to deal with.

China... while a manufacturing power house has a ludicrous overpopulation problem. I mean just building infrastructure to support the rise of those 1 billion chinese people up the wealth system is difficult and while it will happen will take time...

    INdia has similar problems.

What will happen is that things we are accustomed to being cheap i.e gas/oil/petrol/food/ electronic devices etc will get more expensive. As they get more expensive it will prove advantageous for us to re-implement our own manufacturing capability.. the reason our manufacturing industry went down was because it was no economically viable... once imports become expensive it will balance out methinks...

But yea... 2 new cars a year, new mob phone a year massive tvs will happen but not as often in my opinion.

To compete we should innovate and create new technology etc... to support society, which means more scientists and engineers in the country instead of chav and lifers. I.e we should prob be building nuclear power plants now to replace coal and gas power stations which eventually will become unfeasible to operate.
