Looking at your personal situation and not focusing on the picture painted by the media, who is benefitting here from this ''recession''?
I personally have never been so well off in my life as i am now, yesterday i bought a new tumble dryer, £425 down to £195:D
The car market has gone bonkers aswell, more so than the housing market, i was away seeing a 2004 Porsche 911 C4S for under £25k on saturday. The shopping has got a lot cheaper too (Tin of roses+Quality street) 2 for £9.
Bargains galore, not just me thinking this either...

Mitchaa......
(This is so nice to be able to debate on here again)
For those who have a fair bit of throw away money then I doubt it will be seriously having an impact negatively....in fact, they are probably having as much fun as you spending the pennies (not in the toilet sense!).
For me though, it makes no difference if a tumble dryer is £200 or £50, I just don't have the money to buy it...so at the moment, there is no difference from what there was a few months ago for me.
Actually tell a lie, my diesel is £4 a week cheaper than it was in July!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Pride comes before a fall.
Yeah Yeah, I know it's an old wives tale...,but true, so true.
I have been in your position before and I may be again.....feels great.
Enjoy it whilst it lasts because everything can change *snaps fingers* just like that.
Don't take it that I am having a dig or wishing bad things to occur to you...I am not...just enjoy things for what they are today.0 -
if you keep your job... and you can keep up with mortgage payments in the short to medium term its not too bad.
In the long term if houses continue to fall and your house begins to enter negative equity (dont know personal circumstances) you will be worse off when you want to sort your mortgage out off a SVR etc.
Of course too many variables.
Personally in the short to medium term my saving vessels are stuck at 10% RS and 6.17% NR ISA... so havent been hit by interest rate drops.
My company seems to be ok, don't have a mortgage or any debt and wife is same. Have sizeable deposit saved up for a house and will aim to push this further during the crash.
So i'd say not too bad myself at the moment but i don't want to brag about it because thats when life bites ya in the a$$ and all that wonderfulness turns sour.. when prices drop... you lose your job... and get repossessed and have nothing.
Never be too confident
.
Oh and with the recession... if I/WE survive relatively unscathed houses like yours will hopefully be 3.5x income for the area... making it better for all in my opinion.
Recession will be tough, and quite long but people will get by, life won't end though... and in 5-6 years time it wont be a problem.. and if anything we will be better off methinks.0 -
TBH it doesn't really effect me in anyway other than I'm paying less for the gadgets I buy even my ISA is untouched as I got it at a fixed rate 6.25%
I don't pay Gas..elec etc
My job is more secure than most people here
My rent is 50 quid a month and I pay 100 quid a month for 3 square meals a day
And seeing as house prices are continuing to fall I will be saving thousands of pounds when I buy a house next year.
Christ I even get a pension straight away at 40 IF i leave the Army in 5 years time
So I can't complain
In the same breath I've lived my life in a bubble by being in the Army and I'm sure will have quite a shock when I come out....but like to think I have a good head on my shoulders I will be wise in the choices I makeIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
I would tend to agree with the OP.
If you've planned for it , why shouldn't you enjoy it?0 -
i'd get training in the army.. some of that is v useful and transferable to civiy work... and its free :P. I.e new degree/postrgraduate etc etc.0

Things can't be that great if you are even having to consider second-hand...

Invite them round to yours and cook them their xmas dinner, that should cheer them up;)
Sorry, but i do not know a single soul who has lost their job recently and im thinking along the lines of.....If i lost my job, no-one on here would bother and offer condolences, so why should i do the same
Dog eat dog and all that, every man for himself:D
Sorry i cant help it, im just trying to paint a rosier picture because there are a lot of chins trailing the ground at the moment;)0
