Recession, what recession...Isn't it great??

Rampant, high inflation is the killer for those type of jobs...the salaries never keep up as they are reviewed annually.
UK isn't in that situation right now but my dad experienced it during the 70's...his uni salary just couldn't keep up with the rising cost of living. Any consultancy work was taxed to death, so, only worth doing for any academic status that the job had.
Actually times have changed in this respect. At our most recent pay rise in October (in my University anyway) we knew we were going to get 3.5% rise or a rise equivalent to September RPI- whichever was higher. RPI in September was 5% making a very nice, inflation linked rise for all categories of staff in this particular University, at least.
Also, salaries across the HE sector (after recent pay settlements) are much more generous than previously, and approaching equivalence to the private sector.0 -
its not affecting me much to be honest
i have nothing on loan/credit, and am currently happy renting from a housing association...
i dont drive....THANK MEEE:j0 -
The 'good times' will be a very short run phenomenon. Possibly just enough to allow Clown to stagger on to a June 09 election.
Yes, shops are selling off stock at discounts but none of that is being replaced - the Baltic Dry index has fallen off a cliff and container shipments have plummeted. When retailers do tentatively buy again, they'll need to price in the 25% decline in the ££ and pass that on to consumers.
$40 oil won't keep the Middle East and Russia going, we'll either see a drastic production cut by OPEC to get prices back up and/or Russian militarism will restart.
Clown is printing money like there's no tomorrow, there is a huge inflationary pressure from that. Maybe public sector people won't be sacked, they will find they are being asked to be champions of wage-restraint at 2% when inflation is 15%+. Standard of living will be down the toilet.
China isn't able to absorb the social shock of a slump, expect to see sabre-rattling in the Sea of Japan and weakness by Obama exploited with an invasion of Taiwan.
There could easily be an exchange of nuclear missiles by India and Pakistan as that country collapses into an Islamist rogue state.
The Euro zone is coming apart, Germany and Italy have totally diverging economies. Germany won't risk another Wiemar Republic, they'll leave the Euro rather than be bled white to pay the Club Med debt or stand by and see Euro zone inflation spiral, throwing away all their post-war prudence.0 -
There are bits of my job I find annoying but nobody shoots at me and I'm definitely not expected to lay down my life for it.
I find it amazing that someone should sign up to kill or be killed on my behalf having never met me. It's a little humbling quite frankly.
I certainly didn't think when I joined at 16 that i would have done things just like that.....but I can assure you it has made me a better man for it....the things that can worry alot of people just don't worry me anymore
I've seen a different side of life that I wouldn't wish on anybody.....but I reckon its made me a better personIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
Why do we even argue against someone with such bias anyways?
its not bulls vs bears its... mitchaa vs common sense oO.
You say you've made money because your house average is 20k higher than when you bought it.... its just a house... not money. And that money would only be realised if you sold it.
Why you find the need to convince everyone here everything is going to be ok? Really you need to convince yourself.
I dont need to get annoyed about your wall of stupidity or ignorance surrroudning house prices... time will tell.0 -

Where have i mentioned house prices in this thread? Are you looking at my signature?? If so, why? It has no bearing on this thread?
The signature is there purely to wind up people like you, people who believed anyone who bought in 2007 is now in deep financial trouble.
This thread is about the recession and its effects on people. To me, it has had a positive effect as i have never been better off in my life, things are as cheap as chips and there are January sales in December.
My stupidity and ignorance to Aberdeenshire house prices as detailed in my signature is factual not made up;)
Everything is going to be okay..... When i see mass looting and anarchy on the streets, i'll let you know. The majorities will ride the storm, those less unfortunate are in for a rough time. I suspect those unfortunate are in the very vast minority though.0 -
DH says he saw/read about a Jag 3 years old, 17k miles on the clock £60k new - now yours for £20k.
Deflation cometh...............................:eek:0 -
Sorry, but i do not know a single soul who has lost their job recently and im thinking along the lines of.....If i lost my job, no-one on here would bother and offer condolences, so why should i do the same

I honestly hope you don't lose your job, and would offer sincere condolences.
I get where you are coming from with your OP, but it is perhaps a bit insensitively phrased....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

In the net age, I'd have to add wibble and arguments....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Different kettle of fish if working Iraq/Afghan though where 15-18hr days are the norm
Not to mention nasty living quarters, bad food, and little details like people trying to shoot at you and bomb you.......much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
