An engagement ring is only appropriate if that's what they both want. OP's partner has clearly said she doesn't want to get engaged (thus have an engagement ring) or get married until the child(ren) is/are older.

I'm the same and my OH knows it. I would be very upset if he bought me an engagement ring on such an occasion when he knows that isn't what I want!

    Oh dear!

The wedding we would like will cost 20K. Money we don't have at the moment. But we still wanted to start a family together. Is this ok with you?

I don't know if that was aimed at me or OP, but in my case it's because I don't really have particularly strong feelings about marriage and we've got better things to spend our money on than a big party (frankly!).

I think having a baby together is a bigger committment than getting married (which is easily disolved by divorce) so why the importance on getting married (first or at all)?

Because they don't want to. OP has already explained that.

OP - an eternity ring, or other special piece of jewellery, is a great idea.

Dave...you obviously totally miss the point of what getting married means! Its supposed to be the joining of two people together, and not spending ridiculous amounts of money that you dont have!
