Eternity ring for birth of 1st child?

I have read that an eternity ring may be given on the birth of your first child. My OH is due to give birth in one week and I think this would make a great present. However, we are not married and not even engaged! Although I have not asked her to marry me she has said she does not want an engagement ring - I think she feels that spending a couple of thousand on jewellery is a waste of money! She has also said she does not want to get married until the kid(s) are older so they can play a part in the wedding.
So do you think an eternity ring to celebrate our first child would be suitable? Anything abnormal about my ideas!!!? And then maybe we can get married in a few years (totally missing out an engagement!) and she can have a matching wedding ring. Please let me know what you think!
Cheers
Dave

I think its a great idea, although I wouldn't wear one, I'm not a jewellery person. My dad gave my mum one the day I was born. It meant more to her than any other gift shes ever recieved because of the amount of thought he put into it.Saving for a Spinning Wheel and other random splurges : £183.500

I also think it is a great idea. It will be something that means alot to her without it being an engagement ring. Go for it!Love a charity shop bargain0

I wouldn't do it, but then my (pregnant) partner does want an engagement ring. I think it's a nice idea though. Well played.0

My friend got one from her husband on the birth of their second baby and a rolex for the first - she treasures both items.
An eternity ring will last forever, it is a sweet idea and you don't need to spend £1000's.0 -
I also thought eternity ring came after marriage, i thought it went engagement, wedding eternity - perhaps thats just the old fashioned way.
The "old-fashioned" way is to get engaged, get married, then have kids (and receive an eternity ring)
I think it's a great idea! I'm currently pregnant with my first but not engaged nor have any intention of getting married for a good few years, but would love to receive an eternity ring rather than an engagement ring (OH, if you're reading..).

My dh brought me a tiffanys necklace after the birth of our son. It was the best gift he has ever given, easier to get sizing right. Ring sizes are all over place during pregnancy and after. Personally I would not have wanted an eternity ring as to me it is for our annivesary not the birth of our child.
It depends aswell if you do ever want to get married, than maybe she would want the eternity ring after your married.0 -
Thanks all! Some positive responses! I know it's not the traditional way buy neither is having a kid out of marriage!0

No you shouldnt get her an eternity ring. As its engagement ring, wedding ring and then eternity ring. If you do decide to get a ring for her make it an engagement ring, as that is more appropriate as she would have just had a baby.0

Have to say i disagree here, my dad gave my mum one when i was born (they were married at the time) , when mum passed away the ring came to me. one of my most treasured possessions (sp)Wins in 2013 - Jan - Heinz No Noise Ketchup.0 -
