Thats a site for second hand car parts, there are quite a few of them.
I think jeannie blue is right, start off by seeing how much a gearbox will cost from a breakers yardLiverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Hi I am resurrecting this thread..just to give an update and ask for some advice. We ended up repairing the car (wify's pressure to have her car back soon) and the cost mounted up as they told us it needed battery, lever motors and actuator assembly (whatever they all mean) and it took a week and a half to fix the car.
We thought...ok, now we need to run it for a year or 2 to get the money's worth.
But, yesterday...there is some spluttering noise..and we went back to the same mechanic to check if it's the same fault. Apparently, it's a coil pack...which is different from the previous repair..They need another £150 to get it sorted. We are fed up and the car is only worth...2500 and we have already spent 2000 and there is more now. We have decided to take it to part exchange tomorrow as it is and get rid of it. I am still fuming that we spent nearly £2000 and the mechanic doesn't seem to feel guilty...that he made us do the repair and still trying to get us to do more repair.
Is there anywhere I could ring up and check...to see what the mechanic has done is right and that he didn't rip us off?
What would others do...from here on?
Thanks for reading this long post.0 -

The mechanic did what you asked him to do. What he fixed is still fixed.

I partly agree with you...but, It was not quite literally he made us do the repair...I am trying to say...he would have known better, that it was not worth repairing it from his previous experience and I was naive to think that he should have suggested a cheaper option as we were considering part exchange even then.
My point is...while he has to do his business, isn't he supposed to give the best advice considering our situation. I felt may be he just wanted some business and suggested repairing it irrespective of what the car was worth.Part of the fault lies with my wife for acting in haste and agreeing to the repair.
Any way, I would like to find out if there is somewhere online or phone to check, if everything we were billed was warranted?
Thanks0 -

The value of the car has nothing to do with the repairer, if you agreed to the initial repair, and the car has a different fault later, it isn't anybodys fault, it is just bad luck.
I would get rid of it, it is obviously a lemon.0 -
The 2nd repair has nothing to do with the 1st, although the cost for this seems excessive. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
But, and assuming you get this minor fault fixed, what is the point in selling it when you have done and paid for all the repairs??

I would ask for recommendations of other garages from friends/family and take the vehicle there for them to assess the problem.
The £2k repair bill does seem excessive but you should have not authorised extra work without checking with another garage if it was necessary.
Next time you will be wiser. Ask the garage the cost of the part before authorsing them to order and tell them you are only going ahead if the part cost they quote is accurate.
I say this because OH was quoted £50 + vat for a part to repair his rear electric window and then when he rang to see if part was in and when it could be fixed was told the part actually cost £180+ vat. He verified this with another garage and it was correct. However he managed to get the part for £50 from a scrap yard and just paid fitting costs of £30 and it works fine. The only minor point is that it doesn't rise/close via the remote car key but this may have been the case with the new part. The codes probably need sychronising.

So this didn't work too well then?? What cost to reprogram the ecu??
