03 Reg Ford - quoted 1400 for repair...is it worth repairing it?

Hi My wife drives a ford fiesta(semi automatic) which has a problem with gear box actuator...and need upto £1400 to repair it. It doesn't even start and is in a garage. Is it worth repairing it. We have been looking to get rid in a month or two to get a 5 door car.

Not sure what to do as the garage people are saying with out repairing we can't sell it and we would like to get some money as it's only done 33,000 miles. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you had it from new?

Has it been seviced as per Fords guidelines?

If so, then you need to ask the local main dealer, to see if Ford will help with the costs.

If you've bought it used, how long/how many miles have YOU covered ion it? There is a verrrrrry slight possibility that you've a claim against the supplying dealer.

If it was a private sale, then the only option is to pay the repair bill yourself.

The car has minimal value, as a faulty vehicle, but is a saleable model, once repaired.

Thanks for a quick reply. We bought this second hand from a trader(not ford authorised) at 13,000 miles and have done 20,000 miles. Should I go back to the trader...they didn't give us any warranty other than the standard 3 months warranty...if I remember rightly. It's an ex motability car.

    Cheers

Thanks for the replies...I was just wondering if there is anything else, I could do like selling at auction or somewhere with the fault notified to the seller and extract any left value...so, I don't have to pay the repair costs and still get a small increment in the resale value.

Problem with selling at auction would be getting it there if the car won't drive. With such a major fault the car has very little value until its fixed.

You could try advertising it on Ebay with the fault described but it would put a lot of people off and anyone who would be interested would not want to pay much for it.

Agreed - not at such a distance covered, since owning the vehicle.

OP needs to find a gearbox specialist. locally, to sort it, prior to re-sale.

Chances are, it's been given to a repair garage, who are simply guessing costs & price is for an exchange gearbox & fitting.

A specialist, might be able to repair the original gearbox, for lesss £$££$.

How well do you know the garage who have your car?

They may well see you as a distress opportunity and charge accordingly ie very highly.
Find the exact fault and phone around 6 independents for a quote, the price variation will probably be quite an eye opener.
You can have the car trailered to the best quote and still be quids in.
Do not sell it as it is you will literally get a few hundred.
There are 10 similar fiestas on Autotrader from £3k-£4k, there is plenty of value in it once repaired, do not give it away as it is.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I don't know the garage personally, but the garage owner's wife works with my wife. And my wife has already agreed for the part to be ordered (in distress), before I found out the whole problem. I spoke to the garage guy who is saying we have to pay the handling fee if we don't want the repair to go ahead.

    Thanks

    Probably too late...

But I would've tried to source a secondhand gear box first.. and then may be sold it on. Guess it is too late to cancel the order? Has it been put on VOR?
