  • What a great thread!

I have to say that I do buy as much organic produce as possible, not because I want to be 'trendy', but because the idea of spraying my food (and the surrounding countryside) with chemicals aimed purely at killing stuff, doesn't quite sit right with me.

I am lucky enough to have an amazing local box scheme, which is actually cheaper than the non organic veg at the supermarket most of the time! Delivered to my door every week, some of the tastiest food I have ever had. I have to agree that organic food from the supermarket doesn't quite work for me, help the enviroment with the lack of chemicals, and then pollute it by flying it half way around the world and wrapping it in three layers of different plastic?! :rotfl:

I eat meat once a week if at all, I find the veg so tasty, and my 'treat', that I don't really miss it at all. If I can't afford to buy good meat, that has been treated well, then I can't have it. I don't want animals to be mistreated so that I can afford my 'right' to have a sunday roast!

Overall I think that I spend less money now than I used to, probably because I put more thought into what I am eating.

The chicken that has labels like 'assured and rspca assured, freedom food etc are still intensively reared but they are not packed in so tightly.
I'm afraid that i dont have much faith in rspca assured products. The rspca inspect these farms to ensure the welfare of the birds but i have seen many reports about dead hens and squallid conditions in some of these farms.
Unless it says free range on the label the hens are intensively reared.

    totally agree with this!

Battery hens for eggs are kept 5 to a cage...they have less than a sheet of A4 paper each, stand on wire bottomed cages, cant spread their wings or do anything which comes naturally to them. They dont even ever see the eggs they lay as they roll away onto a conveyor belt. They know thay have laid something but have no idea what...bless em!
Barn eggs....there can be up to 30,000 hens in each barn. The top hens guard the small pophole doors and dont allow the more weaker birds outside.
Thousands never see daylight or are able to reach the popholes.

it makes me so sad knowing this. i too have seen the reports/documentaries which show the conditions they live in  it just makes you want to go and rescue them all doesn't it!!!

Battery egg is in everything...M&S are the only place that dont use battery in anything..i dont have to check labels in M&S.
Through public pressure Helmans mayonnaise now only use free range....so many people petitioned them that they caved in.

i don't think many people realise how long it takes me to do my food shopping :rotfl: OH gets soooooo frustrated with me, as i literally take 2+ hours to do a small shop, because i check the labels to everything!

thank goodness helmans are now free range. i was having to make my own mayo, which was a nightmare, and i generally used to go without as it was so much faff! now i treat myself to the occasional bottle.

i've only just started re-using quorn products again, as they've changed to free-range :T

i LOVE shopping in m&s!!! i can be in and out in 20 mins :T unfortunately we only go there when we have a bit of spare cash as we find it to be so much more expensive :(

Edited to say: does anyone really trust whatever the Food Standards Agency says, they are a government body and I bet they are funded and financed (directly or indirectly) by the food industry, industrial donations etc... who knows...The long arm of Monsanto (genetic engineering giant) and the enormous financial interests behind intensive farming make me very suspicious of any established body that tries to persuade me that the newfangled ways are better than the millennia-established farming practices (which is all what organic is after all!). Ok, I shut up for real now!

If it was down to industry lobbying, we'd have had GM foods in this country years ago. It's voter disgust which keeps our food GM free.

...and the thought of the G.M. food having been trashed in the fields during earlier "trials" might just have a little to do with it:D

I gather that they are thinking of conducting some more G.M. foodgrowing "trials" (huh!) in this country - but have thought of a way not to have these sites identified - so they remain "safe"

My wider point is that the organic market exists for the same reason that GM foods aren't sold - consumers power. WE with our money and our votes decide, not agri-business. The FSA is funded by the government and all the lobbyists for Monsanto don't add up to a lot of votes.

Don't confuse the UK's FSA with the US's FDA.

The thought of hens in jumpers makes me chuckle! I want a hen!

The danger with gm is even if its limited to few feilds it can contaminate surrounding areas and seep into ground and water supply.

Just made home made hob nobs from recipie on here however think i still got it wrong as only got 22 biscuits out of it and recipies said like 60 should they be thinner but cost of 8oz butter8oz of oats8oz of oats8oz of flour plus the golden syrup it soons adds up not sure how to cost it really once baked but home baking must be cheaper? I guess its because I had to go out and buy stuff but once brought can be used again reducing cost.
Also at least I know whats going into them.

You aren't comparing like with like though! Twink's hobnobs are a vastly superior product. You are getting a luxury biscuit. You also know exactly what is in them.
