I know someone who has actually done it. He moved into an abandoned house in Plaistow, East London. Managed to claim adverse possession after living in it for 12 years uninterrupted. He's flogging it now for £180K.

Can I just come back on this one. Many years ago I actually spoke to a writer who claimed his was the original book on how to do this. He claimed several other people were copying his idea and "passing it off". He had NEVER managed to do it himself, although, again, he claims he did nearly pull it off once. Most of these books (as that's how long ago it was) involved fencing off patches of unregistered land and putting up notices with the intention of fully claiming it later. I will readily admit there are cases where squatters have eventually taken over properties and more commonly, people have made successful claims over land adjacent to their own which they have used over the years. But I do not know of any case where someone has identified an unregistered piece of land, fenced it and claimed ownership 12 years later.

I think you probably meant to quote the person talking about land, rather than my post. The house in question in my post is real. I've been there. He took adverse possession of it in 1987 or so.

Well, the guy who my cousin bought the land off definately took adverse possession of it. It was directly adjacent to his terraced house and used to have 6 terraces on it so it was a fair size too ;)

If the OP is really interested in purchasing this property they need to find the current owners. They know the name from the land registry search. The next thing to do would be a search for them using the electoral register.
