My cousin lives next door to it and doesnt know whther it is a councill property or privattely owned.
I was wondering how i would beable to find out who it belongs to in the hope of maybe buying it!

    That's easy!

    Go to https://www.landregisteronline.gov.uk.

It'a a government website and it will cost you £2. You put in the address details and you will receive information on who owns it.

I know your cousin lives next door, but have you tried asking the other neighbours? They might be able to fill you in. It could be an elderly person in care or they might know a rough area for you to check the phone book or 192.com?

Councils keep lists of empty homes too. They may even have an Empty Homes Officer. Some have lists publicly available, some don't, but a written request referring to the Freedom of Information Act, means they will have tp provide you with details.

Interesting thread. Ive seen 4 deralict homes locally over the past few years which would make excellent projects. One I know is worth at least 300k if done up nicely and yet its been sitting empty now for at least 10 years. :(

Ive always wondered how to find out who owns such properties.

also a good tip is catching the local milkman, postman or shop keeper and asking about it. often they can give you a potted history especially the shopkeepers.

try sending a letter to the house, the owners may have a forwarding address at the post office.

Hi i've been doing a bit of research into this (still in early stages) having seen a tv programme series recently.
it seems that it is possibe to claim abandoned or derelict houses or land!
google-ing has turned up several sites offering to inform you (for a fee) about how to go about this but if i understand it correctly it basically involves possessing the property (squatting i guess) & then applying to the land registry to get it registered in your name
I think there is some time limit 10-12 years where by if you have possesed it for that long then the previous owner has no claim over it any longer.
sounds interesting but what happens if they turn up?
as i say i'm just starting to look into it myself so do check it out
here are the sites i found
    https://www.claim-free-land.co.uk
    https://www.land-propertygrab.com
Its a tough old world, no one gets out alive!

Dunc - looked into this years ago. Great theory but try and find someone who has actually done it through to the end and obtained anything this way.
