Puppy Driving Me Mad

My puppy (staffie) is adorable, he's already a big part of my life and hopefully will help my ill health. He is only 6 and a half weeks old though and this is his 2nd home :mad: My husbands friend homed him far too early and got bored of him :rolleyes: his loss is our gain though.

Anyway he is gorgeous and a treasure to have except for the pretty much constant crying and like shreaking noise he makes, its driving me bonkers, its all day and night. Husband stupidly thinks he should be in our bed for a couple of weeks til he settles in, I wouldn't mind but the poor thing had fleas when he came so I have red itchy legs and I'm also allergic to him :rotfl:

A friend has leant us a crate but the puppy won't even entertain going in it, I put his bed in, bearing in mind I spent £20 on toys for him but he much prefers to bite hubby but he cried constantly, I left him for half an hour hoping he would shut up and then when he was quiet was going to get him out but after 30 minutes I thought my ear drums were going to explode.

Has anyone got any tips to stop the crying? Everything else about him is perfect but the crying.

They are supposed to :mad: don't get me started on it, we got told her was older than he was but I ended up quizzing the breeder and he's 6 and a half weeks.

He is probably missing his mum and littermates

I would try putting a hot water bottle (not too hot) under his blanket for him to sleep on.

No way should he be away from his mum let alone at his 2nd home @ 6 and a half weeks old.

I aint suprised hes crying

My husbands friend claimed it was because he'd been offered a bigger home, I honestly think he'd got bored of him :rolleyes:

First of all, I think this pup is too young to be away from it's Mum. Therefore it's going to cry i'm afraid. The crate is a good idea but takes time & patience & should be slowly introduced. You can try feeding him in there but let him go in & out at will, maybe throw his toys in for him to fetch & bring to you.

He definitely shouldn't be in your bed, i'd suggest ear plugs maybe lol you're right about only going back once he's quiet. There's some great people on here who should be along soon to advise tho!

I have two Border Collies, and we had our first one at 7 weeks old, we were told he was older.
You need to be his mummy i'm afraid especially at this young age, pick him up and wrap him in a warm towel, this will make him feel safe, and secure and he should stop crying. Wait for him to go to sleep and place him in his crate and leave him still wrapped in the towel. Make sure he can see you when he wakes.
You may also have to wipe him bottom after he has eaten to encourage him to poo, as this is what doggie mums do. They lick their pups bums to encourage them to poo LOL!
In time pup will feel safe and secure, and loved, and he should feel at peace and stop crying.
Don't forget to introduce disapline from 8 weeks, so that he doesn't become destructive....and good luck!

Try putting a ticking clock in bed with him, It will remind him of his Mums heart beat, Sounds daft I know but it worked with my dog many years ago when she was a puppy! Also you can get a spray from vets (and some pet shops O thing) called DAP spray that smells to him of his Mums hormones and will also help stop him crying and help him relax you just spray a little bit on his bed. Its also used for when dogs are scared (fireworks thunder etc) to help them relax but is completely safe even for pups.

This has to be a wind up??? The puppy (Puppy - clue is there) is only 6 weeks old!!! Please find him a good home urgently - don't even think of ever having children......Treating this with all the respect it deserves....

Start a routine and he will get used to it gradually. If you have him in your room he'll just start the crying all over again when you try and leave him to sleep on his own , or you will have him in with you for ever.....

Best to have a small area of the home for him, one or two rooms so it's all familiar. Make the crate a nice homely safe place to be in and he'll get used to it gradually.
Try and ignore the crying and reward him with cuddles when he has been good and quiet for a while.

I think you have to expect a few days of noise and turmoil, hopefully he'll get used to being left for a short time in a few days.

The 'warm water bottle' is a good idea, I've heard a ticking clock can reassure them. We bought a little radio to leave on when Beryl the Peril was a puppy, left it on a 'talking' station so she could hear voices nearby.

Get vet advice for the fleas as you have to be careful what you use when they are tiny.
