I decided that I want to buy one but cant decide which
Can anyone recommend a good low budget one, say under £100 that has european maps, speed cameras included(not trial), a decent amount of memory, voice instructions.
Bluetooth, mp3 and dancing girls:p are not necessary but could be a bonusIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
No need to, I have my routes in my head, I use my eyes to concentrate on the road, not some mini tv screen.;)
No need to look at the screen. "AT THE END OF THE ROAD TURN RIGHT" - "AT THE ROUNDABOUT TAKE THE SECOND EXIT".
Sure you have a 200 mile route into a strange street of a suburb you have never heard of, at night "in your head".
I would blub like a baby if I didn' have my sat nav.
I no longer have my wife navigating and asking me "where are we on the map?". Saved a few marriages no doubt.0 -
took mine to florida,it was worth its weight in gold over there when driving, saving us time finding places.
i used to be sceptical about sat navs but i would never be without one when driving somewhere im not sure of....work permit granted!0 -

vinylmusic - I got this one from Amazon which has European maps, speed cameras (has most of them so no need to update for a few years) and a TMC function (requires antenna lead to be plugged in).
I got a map update for free too (after negotiation with Navigon's customer services). Since installing the map update it displays speed limits on all A roads and motorways.
I only really use it in central London - it can be a bit slow to update when there are a couple of junctions in quick succession but generally does a fantastic job.0 -
It would be interesting to see how well that works driving through central London
Never drive in Central London, I use public transport.:p
I have however driven down to the Costa Blanca in Spain on a couple of occasions, never once taking a wrong turning.

Sounds good
I dont know what update you managed to get for free but I read through the reviews on Amazon and came up with this
"Moving onto the subject of MAPS well they are very old, but that is the case with most sat nav's when you buy them after they have been on the market for a while, for £55 you get 24months worth of maps updates, I dont think that is too bad, Im sure there will be about 2-3 updates in 24months, which works out quite good"
Personally I find £55 for updates expensive taking the full cost up to £138+ which causes me to hesitate on that one.
Does it have postcode search and voice instructions?IWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
If you have common sense you can manage without the satnav IMHO.
Depends what you do, as someone who said I didn't need one I now find it very useful. The reason I changed was this. One day in Manchester I managed 8 deliveries to schools using a to z, borrowed one of my staff's tom toms and did 22 the next day. with the a2z you need time to work out where you are then where you are going next...... the tom tom work out the list pump in the next post code and I shouts the directions to you. Great.
if I was always only going to one destination or going place I knew then no issue but they are fantastic, and a 8 or 9 pounds for an a to z and 95 quid for a tom tom , you don't need many city maps to pay for it.

[quote=hewhoisnotintheknow;16493845]ive never updated one in 5 years
all that happens is roundabouts change into junctions etc

I would agree with that, I have a Tomtom but have never paid for updates and never had any problems - but I do get the free ones offered when I connect it to my laptop and go to the Tomtom site. I would say, use the satnav but in conjunction with theaa.com's or Google maps' route planner.0 -

Some decent ones are available ~£70.
I don't use sat nav when I'm in my own town, but I do use it when I'm going somewhere else. I don't need it while on motorways or A roads, but it is very helpful in town centers.
Since a few people use sat navs in a stupid way (eg. drove into a pond as sat nav told them pond didn't exist), does not necessarily mean it is a bad invention.
Our long lost forefathers did use compass, sun and constellations on the sky to navigate. That doesn't mean we all will do the same.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
Nobody has ever tried to break in to my car to steal my 99p road atlas, of course I don't have sticker marks on my screen to give the game away.;)0
