New kitten....questions & advice (merged)

Hope you've had some success with your quest to find a cat to re-home!
I work for the RSPCA as an Animal Care Assistant. The cats we rehome go with a rule of "no kittens allowed" to people who work full time but we do allow adult cats to be rehomed to people who work full time. Ours go out with no prior stipulation over whether they are to be kept in or let out. Ultimately that comes down to personal choice of the owner (and the cat!) Obviously after the first few weeks of letting the cat get used to its surroundings anyway.
Have you visited any charities nearby yet?0 -
I couldn't have a cat flap as we had about 6 other Cats up here including 2 uncastrated who'd have come in & for safety I won't use a collar, so you could always buy a microchip catflap, it only let's your own cat in. I'll be getting one of these for mine, the other Cats have all gone now, just mine up here, but I know one of the neighbours who's Cat went awol is thinking of kitten/s. Just waiting on my new front door else what's the bet i'll put the new catflap in & they change the door the day after!0

I am interested in rehoming a cat but im wondering if my work commitments would make me unsuitable?
I work all day (Mon to Fri) and leave home at about 7.30am and get home for about 6pm. I live with my brother who works similiar hours but leaves home abit later than me and arrives back before me. Evenings and weekends would be ok, as I dont really do much then.
Therefore, Im guessing that it would probably be unfair to keep a cat inside all those hours? I'd probably not want it left outside due to traffic and other cats/dogs roaming free.
I's really love a cat, but I guess it just wouldnt work out? Do any of you cat owners work full time? What do you do?
Thanks.
I have a cat and we (myself, husband and son) are all out at work all day. The cat has simply happily fitted in with our routine. She toilets entirely outside, with no use of a litter tray (although she had one when she was a kitten). She goes out at about 5.30am and then is in all day. She is let out as many times as she wants during the evening. She stays in at night. During this cold weather she hardly goes out at all!
As far as I can tell she sleeps during the day and is a very contented happy cat.
Go for it! You'll not regret it.0 -

I would try & get him on 90% dry though - it will be cheaper for you & better for him. Whilst he's hungry as a tiddler - it will make life alot easier for you by the time he's fully grown.
However: send off for all the free kitten food samples & feed him everything that's going until you have exhausted the sources!:beer:0 -
Hi everyone!
OH is getting me a kitten for my birthday and we have been looking around at all the different websites but aren't having any luck at all!
I wanted to adopt one but because we rent a house the people at the rescue places are really snobby with us and say they won't rehome cats/kittens to people who rent?!
So I was looking on the websites that sell kittens and the prices are ridiculous!!! Like up to £200 for a kitten that isn't pedigree, and pedigree kittens selling for avg £350! Does anyone actually pay these prices?
I was just wandering if anyone has managed to rescue a kitten from anywhere in the Midlands if they rent a house as I cannot afford to pay £100 for one as well as the vet fees (vaccinations etc)
(sorry if this isn't very moneysaving but I was unsure of where to post?)
Thanks0 -
We paid £350 for our ragdoll kitten and it was the best value ever - considering that his breed is naturally very house friendly and person friendly so they don't scratch, chew or damage your home. When you look at my friends who had a 'free to good home' mongrel kitten, he damaged their house all over, which must have cost a fortune to repair - much more than £350!
BTW - why don't you just tell the adoption people that you own the home - they'll never know and as long as your place is suitable, there shouldn't be a problem!0 -

Haha I can't believe I never thought of that! Silly me
Thanks I will try that tomorrow when we ring some more rescue centres0 -
What a silly rule, i bet the've got lots of cats to rehome too. If you live near stoke on trent there's Iris's cats in need. I got my rascal from there and they're always looking for new homes for cats and don't even ask if you rent or own your home. My latest kitten i got from an advert in pets at home and she only cost £5.00 so it's worth having a look on their notice boards. Also try your local vets too.
Good luck, i hope you manage to find a kitten soon

Wow thanks alot that's exactly what I'm looking for! We live right near stoke so I'll google them now :j0 -
do you have your landlords permission to have a pet? they wont rehome to renters unless you have written consent from your landlord because if they find out and you dont have their permission the kitten will end up back in the rescue centre. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0
