I still haven't had a response back about collecting the item... to be honest I wouldn't buy anything like this, but I doubt I'd report him! It does make me angry that he is taking advantage of the less knowledgable ebayers! Just my opinion...

So do you not get angry with the nigerian scammers who take advantage of the less knowledgable ebayers?

Yes I get angry with anyone taking advantage of anyone else, but I wouldn't spend my days trawling through ebay looking for people to report... only if I am directly effected or family/friends are!

AND if there is a problem the buyer will get their 1p back and lose £39.99
That depends on the seller's previous record. This is not a "scam" because how it works is very clear from the outset. It is a questionable thing to do, but Ebay obviously have a problem in that they can only say that "unreasonable postage charges" are against the rules.

well it came to may attention (too late as normal) that when pay pal are offering thieir 'free postage' codes (as they did a couple of weeks ago), why not purchase one of these 1p items, whether it be a TV, Laptop or anything these scam artists are trying to sell and get a very good deal!?! unfortunatly i wasted my last free postage voucher on saving a couple of quid for posting xmas gifts!! damn brain always too slow!!

also i was thinking worldwide postage could be taken advantage of for items such as large electricals not yet (or ever to be) released in England!!

ah, well thats enough thinks for today, back to crappy revison! have to say its nice to see a community dedicted to screwing companys over, since all they ever seem to do is screw us over!!

Not sure how it would work out really. Ebay dont seem to address situations like this.

I can't disagree with you on the fact that ebay need to charge fees to keep their site going but it is the scale of the fees that get me. Particularly as they also own Paypal and it is difficult to get buyers to use alternatives (such as Nochex who are cheaper for selling).

You make a lot of valid points as to whay eBay/PayPal suck, and i totally agree with them.

I feel the fee structure is unfair; the relisting fees unfair; the fact that you have to pay both eBay and PayPal unfair; the fact that they make it so easy to pay using PayPal, but so hard to pay by other means, just plain wrong.

I don't have a problem with sellers charging a bit extra to cover packing costs. Nor would I have a problem with sellers charging extra to cover PayPal fees, and feel this should be allowed. My only requirement is that these extra fees are clearly marked on the auction page so that the Buyer knows exactly what they will be paying. (If you check other threads, you will see that I have often defended sellers against angry buyers who complain that that they were charged more p&p than what it cost to post the item).
I respect your opinion on this one but I just find it difficult to agree

That's ok, we all have our own opinions. :) You asked how someone dodging fees affected the OP personally, and I was just pointing out how it affects all sellers pesonally.

Not only is there the financial cost, but there is also the reputation of eBay sellers at stake. Imagine if lots of people start using their own little scams to start dodging eBay and/or PayPal fees. Now, mix those in with the real scams that are going on, on eBay. How is a buyer supposed to spot the genuine seller? If all they come across is lots of auctions that don't follow eBays rules, they are not going to trust anyone, and potentially be driven away from eBay.
