Help! £500 quote from garage that seems a bit much!

My husband's car has been making a soft humming/clicking sort of sound for the past couple of days. No problems at all with the running of the car or anything. It's a 2002 Renault Clio.
We've never used a garage in our area since we moved here a couple of years ago. Hubby took it to Nationwide Autocentre earlier today.
They have just called him back to say it will cost £500, as they have to replace wheel bearings, tracking and replace all 4 tyres.
Hubby is quite hot on checking the tyres, as we travel nearly 200 miles every few months to visit family, and it seems strange we would need all 4 replaced.
EDIT: He's just gone to collect his car back and take it elsewhere, but I'd be ever so grateful for any views or opinions of anybody 'in the know'. Thanks!

Sounds like they could be quoting for unneccessary work. Take to a local independent garage and get a second opinion!"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,
He will kill your cat and nail him to the door"

Troule is a little Clio may only have 13/14" wheels so the tyres may only be £30each for budgets. Amazing how Nationwide only find stuff wrong that they fix. Never an injector fault, electrical problem or more complex issue...just tyres, bearings and im surprised they didnt say shocks :A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0

Thanks for your reply!
Ooops, I'm thinking my OH should have come on here before he went running off to Nationwide!
Thanks for the reassurance.
Even if it turns out they were right (which I have a sneaky suspicion they're not!), at least we'll have got a second opinion.
He's taking it to an independent garage now, as the recommendation of a couple of my colleagues.
Fingers crossed!Thrilled to be DEBT-FREE as of 26.03.10

why would they find something wrong with the injectors if its a problem with the wheels0 -
I was reminded of my experience with Nationwide at the weekend.
I drove our Ka back from where I keep our other car, I'd been using the bonnet prop as I'd used jump leads and the rumble of the knackered diff that Nationwide diagnosed was back.
Grumble grumble grumble went the noise, but when I got home, I popped the bonnet prop back in the boot where it lives now.
And the Ka was fixed again
I'd look for a 2nd opinion!0 -

They could have a blow out which severs a fuel line draining the system and seizing an injector?!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
