You can change them hence why many owners do change them eg 195/50/15 are very close to 185/55/15 that many people fit them to clios with 15 inch wheels for exmple.
But how much wider is that than 165/65/14s fitted as standard? It will make a differenceI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Never use 'nearly new', how can you know that they've not been weakened by a pothole but the tread's ok? Get budget if money is a factor, at least they will be safer...I've used "runners" before but I agree with Ti on this better getting cheaper tyres than 2nd hand ones the other thing is you don't know how old they might be……Better safe than sorry.……..As regarding tyres, agreed with most that one shouldn't buy 2nd hand. As said, buy brand new budget if cost is an issue. As for changing tyre size, as long as it is similar circumference to original tyres then there isn't most problem.
Does this extend to a recommendation to change the unknown history tyres that come attached to every second hand car that changes hands?0 -

You've both got valid points. I have bought part used in the past, but wouldn't now, tyres have got wider, speeds and corner stress has increased with modern cars.
I would counter the argument re the tyres on a 2nd hand car by suggesting that if the overall condition of the car was A1 it would suggest that the package has been treated with respect?I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Yep, some do I’m sure, others come from replaced mismatched sets, some are imported from countries that have stricter rules about tyres than the UK but all should be carefully inspected inside and out before fitting. The tyres on your “new” second hand car could be any of the above and have spent the last 10,000 miles being bumped into potholes and curbs. The logic of second hand tyres being acceptable if you buy them as part of a car but not if you buy them by themselves just doesn’t hang together
Personally I’d much rather have second hand premium tyres than new budget but if others disagree then hey, it just means I have more choice.0 -
