Is it possible to teach my next cat road sense?

  • When we got our British short hair kitten a year and a half ago, we had no intention of letting her go out doors. our previous cats had always been allowed out.

However it just seemed somehow wrong to keep a cat locked up on such a wonderfull sunny day ( rare i know  )
so we live in a very quite neighbourhood we slowly introduced Abby
into the garden during during the summer of 2007 , and the site of her shaking with excitement with all the new sites and smells....chasing butterflys etc.

now she goes out for around an hour a day and doesnt leave the garden
the neighbours cats come over to visit ( her boyfriends :D as the OH puts it.)

this kind of weather were having today she is happy to simply look out of the window.

I had a cat from when I was 2 (ahem...I accidently stole him from the litter, hid him in my coat, ha ha) till I was 20. He always went outside when he wanted too.

He used to go to the shops with me and wait outside, then he'd walk back home with me. He also used to knock on the window when he wanted to come back in. And hide behind the door and wait for the postman (hmmmm....he wasn't popular with the postie).

He also used to stop next door going in their house until they knocked on our door so we'd let him in (if we hadn't let him in after knocking on the window). If we didn't answer they had to let him in their house....especially if it was raining!

I was gutted when he died. And have never EVER met another cat like him. He was a bit confused I reckon....sure he thought he was a dog!

One of my fav memories is when he decided to attack a low flying seagull and went up, up and away!! I thought he was a gonner. He fell off after going up to a rather great height!!! Fortunately he landed in a tree and my dad climbed up to get him down!! Stupid bloody cat!

  • hey just wanted to add my bit, i will soon be a kitty owner, but my mum rescued a kitten from the cpl, 3 months ago. she recently got neautered, after recovery started going out. all was fine, wouldnt leave the garden, very shy and timid lil thing she is, and has now been missing for nearly a week.
another reason why mine shall be an indoor cat. my mum brothers n sisters have searched and put up posters, but i doubt she shall be seen again, and only hope im wrong.

I think it just depends on the cats- some really want to go outside. My current kitten, even though he was a farm cat and lived outside for a while before I got him, he doesn't really like to go out, even though both of my cats are free to go out.

Had to stop my 6yr old one from using his litter tray when he was kept inside.

Even though it might be safer to keep them inside, I really believe that mine are happier for going out, but I suppose it depends.
