Is it possible to teach my next cat road sense?

Sadly the little tabby that adopted me when I moved in got squished last night. poor little sod was so friendly and loving.

I wish there was a way - if anyone can tell us how to I'd be eternally grateful. One of my cats got hit by a car but he still goes over the road, just much faster than he used to. As far as I can tell the only way to stop them getting run over is to stop them gonig out at all, or to have a cat-proof run/garden for them.0

Cats have no road sense whatsoever and it is not unusual for us to see a cat that has been run over more than once. Sorry but there is no way to reduce the risk without a cat proof pen0

I have reserved two kittens for collection at the end of Jan, they will be living at my Ohs as her house backs onto open fields, and a quiet cul de sac at the front.
Having said that mine was run over on a single track country lane, dozy sod I do miss him.0 -
Ours got run over on a private drive, I have an idea who did it and the people who live up the drive know us but hadn't got the guts to tell us
Some cats do seem to have road sense - I saw one cat regularly wait at a pedstrian crossing for the light to change for him before he'd cross. He wasn't crossing with people, either - sometimes people would press the button for him to cross! One very intelligent cat :T0 -
I dont think most cats ever 'get it' - my OHs mum spent huundreds getting her cat's pelvis pinned back together after he was bashed by a car, he died several years later after getting run over again .0

Sadly when you let cats out to roam free there is always a risk that they will be killed on the roads. The only sure way of protecting them is to cat proof your garden or build a cat pen, which is what I have done. I'd always have indoor cats, they have as much a happy life as ones who roam free, If you keep a kitten indoors from the start the cat doesn't know any different, although it would be harder for a rescue who was previously let out to become an indoor cat.
Goodluck with your new cats and sorry for your loss.0 -
I think 'quiet country roads' are probably the worst, as the cat gets used to coming and going as they please - until the worst happens - I lost so many cats like that I gave up trying to keep cats at all when I lived in a villagePlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

this may sound silly but maybe try a harness...and try teaching a simular way to a dog? obviously not 'sit', but maybe pull cat back with harness if he/she attempts to just cross a road?
sounds mad when i read it back!!! lol:cool:0 -
Lady A - it's ok, you aren't as mad as this....:) these are quite popular in America - cat strollers. i would love to have the bottle to walk through the City with my two in one of these0
