I've only ever had outdoor cats (or at least, cats who are allowed outside when they want), and spend a lot of my spare time rescuing and fostering feral/stray/ex-farm cats. Not to mention spending vast amounts of money getting them neutered! Most of them have lived well into double figures - I have a feral who is at least 22 now - although of course there's always the odd one who is too ill when rescued to stand a chance of survival, or who think cars will always stop for them. They will wander for miles in quite a short time, which is one reason I've never felt entirely happy with the idea of house cats. If our garden was big enough I'd like to have it completely enclosed so the cats can still go outside but our garden is tiny.
Havanas are gorgeous! Someone I know has two of them, they're completely mad but adorable cats

Omg a cat stroller?!!! Imagine how much you'd dent their pride haha! I have to young cats and we live in a quiet cul de sac in a suburban area, so they're quite safe. Fortunately, my boys are quite good with roads and run to the house as soon as they hear a car noise.0

After a lengthy discussion with Oh last night we have decided to go with your solution Kimberley, My new Havana Kitts will be house cats, and I will invest in an out door house and run. As securing the garden isnt feasible due to size.
Am not prepared to lose another cat in the same manner.
Here is mine almost finished. It wasn't expensive at all.

I shall in the summer let my Oscar on the grass on a harness. I have bought three outdoor cat trees to go into the cat house. If you want to know where from then PM me or you can make them yourself.0 -
I do think we should do what Australia has and thats ban stray cats, we have with dogs. When I was a kid we had stray dogs wandering around and that was soon outlawed so why not cats? This would solve all these unwanted kittens coming along and ease the rescues with strays.
Are you suggesting that we round up all the stray cats and shoot them like they do with the brumbies and kangeroos over in Austrailia?0 -

Did i say that?
I said we should ban them meaning people should be made to keep their cats indoors or in a secure garden. There should not be any stray cats out there who don't belong to anyone.0 -
Keeping cats indoors won't work, its not right.

Sorry, bad day but it really isn't clear from your post what you meant and the vast majority of cats aren't stray if they belong to someone who choses to let them out. Remember the law recognises cats as feral thus recognising they are not as domesticated as dogs. And there are stray dogs too, the only reason you don't see them is because they get taken to the pound and get pts after seven days.0 -
I believe (but might well be wrong) that cats are exempt from laws like that, because it is acknowledged that they are by nature 'roaming' animals, and it would not right for every pet cat to be confined to a small area - some are fine with being a house cat/ having access only to garden etc, some aren't and it would cause behavioural issues.
As I said I am not 100% on this, and can't remember where I read it - does anyone know any more?I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

My cat is currently 10 1/2 & i've had cats for 24yrs & only 2 were killed by cars out of over 20. ALL lived past 5, way past 5. None have had issues with diseases or fleas, if you vaccinate & neuter there's no reason for them too.
Had cats all my life and totally agree with above, however am very tempted o get a stroller for my elderly lazy female:rotfl:0 -

Honestly, its all just personal opinion, but as a cat lover and owner I wouldn't keep indoor only or let out only to a pen, but thats just me, mine wonder and roam and I do everything in my power apart from confining them to keep them safe, we all love our cats but just have diff ways of letting them be xx0
