ELQ info please

Options
Just wondering if anyone has further info about ELQ.

Is it definitely coming in in September 2009?

I know there are some exceptions (medicine, dentistry, social work, architecture, foundation degrees etc).

However I want to know if there are any exceptions for certain groups of people rather than the subjects studied? e.g. disabled students retraining?

Thanks in advance

It refers to the withdrawal of funding for courses at a similar or lower level. I believe that students receiving DSA are exempt.
  • ELQ refers to students studying towards an equivalent or lower level qualification then one they already have. The Government will no longer provide funding for such students - So for example if you already have a BSc and want to return to uni to do another, the University won't be able to claim government funds for you, so may either not accept you, or charge a fee to cover the full cost of the course...

It was implemented by the Government in 2007-08 so it's already in place - Universities are just taking the hit at the moment, but it's likely they'll start charging such students higher fees to cover their costs.

Students in receipt of the Disabled Students Allowance are exempt, as are certain courses e.g. medicine, dentistry, teaching and all Foundation Degrees.

I work in Management at a Russell Group University, so let me know if you have any more questions in relation to this.
  • I am currently in my fourth year of a BSc (Hons) in Scotland, and am looking to do an MPharm in pharmacy either in Scotland or England once I am finished. Where do I stand on the ELQ thing?
Why has no-one made a bigger fuss about this anyway. It just seems the government are more interested in meeting their targets in education than actually having a decent workforce. No wonder the country is the way it is.

Have you checked with the university what fes they'll be charging for someone in your situation?
  • I haven't checked yet. I didn't even realise there would be a problem until yesterday! It is sickening me though to think it is another hurdle in my way!

I don't think there's anything wrong with the government not wanting to pay to have someone do another degree if they've already got one. I know too many people who have gone to university because they don't know what to do/don't want to get a job then graduate, decide they've done a degree they have no use for, don't want to get a job (or can't due to taking a degree which has no practical use) and decide to go back to uni. We can't expect the government to pay for the wims of everyone who wants to continue in education without putting their skills to work.

I'd much rather have more people given the opportunity to go to university in the first place and then using those skills for the good of society and the economy than having the same people doing multiple degrees at the same level.

Don't dare assume my degree choices were on a whim!
I unfortunately obtained poor results at school, and have always wanted to do pharmacy. When I spoke to the schools of pharmacy 5 years ago, I was told I would have to get a degree before they would consider me. Thus, I chose a degree in Biomedical Science which I thought would be related to the degree I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO and one that would give me a decent job if I couldn't get in to pharmacy.
So don't assume that all students are the same. This is as much of a whim as looking before I cross the road!
  • Even if not a whim, I'm not sure why you think that you should be funded for 8 years just because you got poor results at school.

I'm not expecting to be funded as a first time student but surely there must be some sort of compromise instead of having British students being classed the same as foreign students. Plus why should people be punished for a lifetime for one stupid young mistake?

Talking of whims, the only whim i can see is john denham making up this farcical rule
