Growing up in Yorkshire, we always had fish n chips with mushy peas, slice of bread and butter, and a pot of tea.
Living down South now, I have yet to find a fish and chip shop (I did, but they closed when they won the lottery) that can compare to 'up North'.
I send OH out for them, while I heat up the peas and butter the bread, Kids look at the peas as if they are something they wouldn't give to the dog, I look at their saveloys the same way.
Lovely too with a hot pork pie in a bowl and smothered with mushy peas and mint sauce.
For convieniance, I stock up on tins, and they are good, but I do love the ones in a bag with the tablet.

I was thinking about food we had as child, Mum used to get date sandwiches (a block, heated up with a tiny drop of water 'til mushy and spreadable) when she was a child in WW2, swapped her own jam ones for date from the kids in a local orphanage with a mad cook. She often gave them to us as child.
Banana sandwiches were another staple for tea, as was sliced cucumber in vinegar.
She always made enough Yorkshires at Sunday lunch,so we could have them for tea with strawberry jam, lovely.
I detested tinned salmon sandwiches which always had vinegar in, and tinned fruit with evaporated milk. But I always adored Dream topping, can you still buy that?

    Hi Haffiana,

There's an earlier thread with lots of tips on making perfect mushy peas so I've added your thread to it to keep the ideas together.

  • I love mushy peas on toast and the Tesco value ones used to be brilliant. Bought 3 tins the other day and they were awful watery green slop with a few hard-ish peas, very disappointing.

Anyway i've 2 more tins lurking in the cupboard and I now won't eat them on toast as planned but won't throw them out either, has anyone any suggestions on how to use these and how to disguise their general awfulness?

    Thanks.

Never tried mushy peas on toast but I like them too. I find Aldi own brand one of the best, I always get a few tins in as I do go them too often. Love them with chips (Aunt Bessies crinkle), beer batter onion rings (tesco) and Barry Normans pickled onions (Sainsburys), hot hot :)
