    I now buy the dried peas in a huge bag from a cash and carry if I see them on offer.
    As my mealplanning skills are not too great, if they are in the freezer, then I can use them, If I just soak enough for what I need next day, my plans change and they get binned.
    I am intending to start doing the same with other dried pulses, I will use up my chickpea mountain. :rotfl:

    I soak mine then divide in two. I cook one half and put the other half in the freezer. Just take them out the next Sunday, they don't take long to defrost and cook as you would normally. I add a bit of salt and sugar! mmmm

    Can anyone give me a recipe for mushy peas? I am a Londoner, and have just tried some for the first time in a cafe in Asda! They were utterly delicious - what a fabulous texture! If the ghastly cafe can make them this nice, then surely I can do at least as well... And because peas are legumes, then they should also have plenty of protein, and be low fat, healthy and thrifty! The ultimate comfort food in fact. :D

    I have googled this, and there seems to be some difference of opinion about the bicarb of soda. Should it be put with the soaking water, or with the cooking water, or both or neither? Does it need any other flavouring? Mint? Butter? Vinegar?

    When you find a decent recipe, I would be grateful if you could send it to all the chippies up in Scotland, as they have never heard of mushy peas and being from Lancashire, I miss it... :(

    I use Batchelors Quick Soak dried Peas, usually found near the Pearl Barley and lentil type stuff.

    Yup, same here, they don't even do gravy in Scotland!!! !!!!!!??? lol
