What rubbish advice given on these threads-the old chestnut about CRT being better on SD is nonsense-given the SAME screen size

Actually I think it is true that CRTs are better at displaying SD signals. Having just moved from a CRT to a reasonably good HD telly I can definitely notice that SD picture on the HD telly looks worse. It seems to be down to how the HD tv scales the SD picture up to the native screen resolution.

The only time a SD signal looks better on the HD tv seems to be when running off the DVD player.

On the subject of 720 vs 1080, I read somewhere that you can only tell the difference between the two if you are watching from within 2.5 screen widths away. Since getting my new TV I have tried playing 720 and 1080 content and 1080 definitely looks better even though the screen is only 32". I do have to sit quite close though due to the size of the living room.

I have been in countless electrical shops and seen large screens displaying HD and HD ready pictures and I struggle to tell the difference between that and DVD pictures.
Are there others out there like me who reckon this new technology is not worth it?

SD pictures can look fantastic on a REALLY good hdtv

The inbuilt scaler is fine - as I said, SD pictures from DVD do look better on the HD telly. The problem is with the picture from a broadcast signal, all of the imperfections show up where as they are hidden on the CRT TV.

I looked long and hard for a HD tv that would show a good picture with a SD broadcast signal, it was the same on all the ones I looked at, even the ones that were top of the range.
