  • Has anyone encountered any problems using these Pre-Paid cards online, where the website uses 3D verification (i.e. Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode)? I've got a TravelEx Cash Passport and various online stores won't accept the card, reporting a '3D verification required by this vendor' error. I checked with MasterCard and there isn't any info about pre-paid cards?

It's a good card for general UK use, though there are some unusual charges that it's worth being aware of:

    Hi,
Just got one of these and find it very good. No monthly charges, free top ups from your bank by debit card, free top ups in orange shop. Free usage to buy goods. Only charge when withdrawing cash - and then a % so ideal for small cash withdrawls. Can also get extra cards for teenagers (14 plus I think is age limit).
Just right for a pre paid debit card if you are not trying to build up a credit score but just want to use it for budgeting and safety knowing you won't overspend.

What is everyone's opinion on the following prepaid card:

    Neteller's Net+ Prepaid Mastercard

Should I apply for it or not?

I have had one of these for over a year now and find it very useful. You will see Neteller is often used with online gambling so some of their offers require £000's per month usage, BUT don't worry as I simply use it as a low throughput pre-paid debit card and it works.
Free to use for purchases and free top ups via debit card or bank transfer.

As well as the plastic card a BIG plus point is their Net+ virtual card for online purchases. It's a one time virtual card number so very safe to use with dodgy retailers online etc.... Not many people offer this facility, I used to use Cahoot for their virtual card and then when they stopped doing them searched around and found Neteller to be the best.
    [/STRIKE]
Minus points: Initial card Verification with Neteller when I did it required a single short phone call to Canada as I had missed their call to me, but that may have changed by now and is the only minus point I can think of.

BIG MINUS POINT - Neteller WITHDREW their Virtual NET+ card at the end of February 2012.:(

Very very little notice was given about this happening - I only found out by email just over a week before it happened.
  • Hey guys, quick question if anyone can help?

I've just moved to Tokyo and I'll be here for a year. I don't own a credit or prepaid card, but to set up the mobile contract I want out here I need a credit card, they won't accept my debit card.

My question is, can I get a prepaid card (for example a Mastercard one), have my family send it to me and use it over here just as I would a credit card? Would the phone company know the difference? I don't want to get a prepaid card just to have it not work..

Thanks to anyone that can help!

They will recognise it as a pre-paid card using the BIN number.

Or, their system might just ignore it altogether.

There's no harm in trying. All the best :)

    Hi everyone.

I wonder if anyone could give me some advice.

I want a prepaid card purely for security - I have been the victim of debit card fraud twice now and at least once was definitely down to internet fraud. I no longer feel safe to enter my bank debit card details online, but I don't want to give up internet shopping so I thought if I got a prepaid card, at least it's not linked to my bank account and I can't lose any more than I load onto it.

Trouble is, the guides seem to recommend cards based on different types of use, but my type is kind of a hybrid of both. I don't want to use the card in physical shops in the UK or abroad, just online - but I do buy from non-UK based sites which sometimes charge in dollars and euros, and well as using regular UK sites which charge in pounds.

So I don't know what kind of card is best - they tend to recommend ones for internet use, which seem to assume you'll be shopping only on UK sites which charge in pounds, or if you want one which allows you to pay in dollars or euros they assume you'd looking for a card to physically use abroad.

Which card is best for use purely for internet shopping but which can also be used to pay on non-UK websites in dollars and euros? Any ideas?

Does anyone use their prepaid card on non-UK websites?

Also I applied for a Kalixa card and they said they'd contact me in a few days to say if they'd approved me or needed more info. I heard nothing from them for ages, then weeks later they e-mailed me to remind me I hadn't completed my application and needed to enter a funding source and load my card - but no card has been delivered and they hadn't contacted me to say I'd been approved. Now it looks like they have approved me but want my debit card details to load up cash. This makes me a bit suspicious of them, and it also means if I did complete my application I'd have to enter my new debit card details online, which is exactly what I want a prepaid card for - so I don't have to use my bank debit card online!

Anyone know if Kalixa is genuine and why this happened?

Can anyone recommend a card which is secure and trustworthy? The trouble is most of the companies offering them I've never heard of, so it makes it difficult to know who to trust.

I'd like the lowest fees possible of course but I'm happy to pay higher fees for a card which is from a trustworthy and secure company, allows me to shop online in dollars and euros, and allows me to top up in a shop or post office so I don't have to enter my bank card details online.

Any ideas on which card is best for me please?

RSteve, have you thought about opening a new current account and transferring money to that and using that card to spend online? It's a good make shift prepaid card and you don't have to worry about the fees associated with prepaid cards.

I use my cashplus card on sites all over the world and never had a problem - I use it also in shops here sometimes but usually load it for on-line shopping. I have been using it for about 6 years now. There is a monthly charge of £4.95 but I don't mind. I chose it as I needed a credit card but did not want to get one that could lead me into spending what I do not have ( I have a building soc account for that reason as well as no overdraft with them and been using that for over 20 years) as I dread the thought of getting into debt.

Cashplus also do a euro and a dollar card and I have used the euro card abroad and the dollar card to buy from usa and found rates of exchange not to bad. For other countries I decide if its better to pay in pounds - using main card or in euros or dollars I just keep money on them.

I so far have not found any downside to using this card no matter how I use it, never had it refused, even from a garage that said it does not take prepaid cards, the card went through fine.

You do not need to give them your banking details to load the card - they send you it and you take it and load it. You can transfer money from your bank account to them on-line, but you don't give them your details you transfer to them as you would any other bill. I think the card is £10 to buy - they send you a letter( well they did when I first got mine around 6 years ago) and you take that to a payment point and pay the £10 there, might have gone up or down since then, but they do not assume you have any other cards not even a debit.

    Just my twopence

  • Hi - help required,

The wife and I have gone through the process of getting rid of all of our credit cards but are going away to Spain in the summer and require a credit card for the car hire.

I am looking at the FxFair MC will this work? The credit card will only be required for the copy as a security as we will pay cash (debit card) before we travel.

    Thank you for your help
