  • Hi all,

I'm looking for a visa electron card to save on airline fees but have discovered - after following the link to Martin's recommended Travelex card - that it seems to have changed into a Mastercard instead :(

Has anyone got a recommendation for the next best card to get?

    Thanks!

    Ian

The halifax easycash account does does a visa electron card with that account.

I've tried a couple of times to apply for the Travelex Cash Passport for the World Cup, but each time it tells me
"We are unable to continue with your online Cash Passport order at this time."
And invites me to order one instore. I don't want to do that as the exchange rates are worse and can't top up online.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Spoke on the phone to Travelex. I think its because I've only been at my current address for 3 months. I can only get one in-store so I'll have to deal with Co-Op's poor exchange rate and also they charge me £2.50 for each withdrawal! (Order online from Travelex and you aren't charged)
  • I fly a lot with ryanair and want to aviod their ridiculous booking fees. I have heard you can do this using a prepaid mastercard.

The question is which one is best?

I travel perhaps once or twice a month and that's all I will be using it for. Any ideas which one would be best for me

But with that Fairfx card are there any dormancy fees etc?
4 years of entering competitions daily and not a thing won. What a fix.
  • I have seen articles in the press recently about a pre paid Mastercard from Currencies Direct which I believe is underwritten by Newcastle Building Society. I travel to France 2 to 3 times a year to visit my parents and wonder if this type of credit card is a good idea. I like the idea of paying up front so there are no nasty bills on my return. It might also be a good idea as I can put any money left at the end of the month into it - sort of like a savings account.
Has anyone else used Currencies Direct and are they a reputable company? Has anyone had any problems using this type of card abroad?

https://www.fxdirect.com is the card recommended by MSE. It also has the plus of having no minimum amount to put on the card.

re your underwriting point - I think they all come from Newcastle Building Society (and i think they all state that if they go under, you lose your money!)

Just got an Escape card from Phones 4 U. Initial £9.99 cost but then free to use for spending and free to top up via internet banking. Need it to use as a fuel card for my driver and seems ideal. Any comments. One niggle is nobody answers the customer service line.
