Think you could try telling the buyer that as they did not ask for special delivery, you will not be refunding them, it was thier choice not to insure- know thats not the truth- that if they want to claim the cash back they can, but personally.
I would try this first and wait to be told by them that they want the refund. Any negative feefdback (which you would likley get anyway) could be replied to (on the same page as the feedback is on) with something along the lines of "well you said you specificly didn't want insurance, this is your error, not mine.
I would rather they went through the rigmarol of going through paypal then me happily giving back the refund if you do think the buyer is trying to get one over on you- if they contacted you within a week, I would worry- most buyers would leave a good 2 weeks incase of delays before querying, but if you have had an email within a few days, its likely they have had te item received and straight away think "hmmm, now how can I claim the cash back from this...."
Also its a criminal offence to claim back the price of the item when it was actually delivered- if they find out it has been, its a crime. It could help to mention this to the buyer, let them know they will set the police on to it. (They wont but could make himrethink things).
Just to add, if the item was jewelery, DONOT tell Royal Mail when making a claim- they have a weird catch 22 where they will not pay out for jewellery. The women told me this in the post office as I sent out some jewellery to someone, I decided to call it clothes insted!
Royal Mail do not cover cash, jewellery or tickets /vouchers etc in standard mail, that is in their terms and conditions. For that you need special which the OP needed anyway due to value. To do any claim anyway you need to send in the paypal and ebay details , so the item cannot be hidden.
Incidentally OP, you claim not to be naive as your neighbour conveniently forgot to send it tracked yet in your own posts you state that you sent it standard post as buyer did not pay for the tracked delivery...I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Errmm, as most other posters have pointed out, it's the seller's responsibility to ensure the buyer safely receives the item they have paid. The seller needs to ensure it is adequately insured / tracked. In case of problems, the seller needs to refund the buyer promptly, (after asking them to check their local sorting office, obviously.) The seller needs to then claim compensation from RM. It's not reasonable to expect them to wait weeks.
Sorry OP, but you know all this really, don't you?
However, haven't noticed how they paid. Was it Paypal? If so, they can be refunded quite easily unless you can provide tracking, which we know you can't
. If they paid by cheque, PO or bank transfer, it can be incredibly difficult for them to get a refund, involving small claims court etc. If you suspect they're not genuine, and they didn't use Paypal, perhaps you could call their bluff? some of the 'advice' on this thread
shut your account, lie to RM,tell the buyer you will get the police involved, was meant to be sent recorded(still only £36 insurance FYI).............
if you cannot cover yourself by sending by the appropriate manner then i suggest you wait till you can.
an expensive lesson0 -

I asked my friend to send it recorded. Even though the buyer paid for first class I thought it best to get a proper proof of delivery with tracking and a sig at the other end ie, recorded delivery. This is the bit my friend forgot to do so it just went plain old first class.
Obviously, what I should have done was ask him to go one better again and go for Special Delivery with the correct level of compensation. On that front I WAS naive. Well, not so much naive but so bloody busy and stressed out lately that I wasn't thinking on all cylinders.:o0 -

They paid by PayPal. I'll give it a few more days then refund them. At least it'll all be over and I can put it behind me and maybe get some proper sleep again.:rolleyes:0 -

Unfortunately, Recorded isn't tracked. It should be signed for upon delivery, but it goes in with the regular mail. The compensation limit is only £36 for recorded. If you sold the item for £300, then it looks like you've learnt a bloody expensive lesson. Only Special Delivery is tracked along its route, and there are options for increasing insurance cover too.Exclamation and question marks - ONE exclamation mark or question mark is sufficient to exclaim or ask about something. More than one just makes you look/sound like a prat.
Should OF, would OF. Dear oh dear. You really should have, or should've listened at school when that nice English teacher was explaining how words get abbreviated.0 -

Someone should tell the lady that at my local PO. She told me it was tracked all the way but I've just checked on RMs website and it's not tracked....it comes with an online confirmation of delivery. Slightly different.0 -
what postcode area?

yup not tracked.
though she maybe old school and thinking of registered post which was the old term for special deliveries0 -
Let's just say it's a little village sub-post office, she and her hubby are no spring chickens and the time it takes getting served by her is measured on the calendar not the watch.;) :rolleyes:0

Due to working long days (and sometimes nights too) and having no access to a Post Office in my lunch break (I work in the middle of nowhere at a military base) I asked a neighbour to post my items for me when he was in town. He sadly forgot to send this one in particular by recorded mail and sod's law being what it is....this is the one gone AWOL.
If it had gone recorded you'd have only had £36 worth of cover."Love you Dave Brooker! x"
