I recently sold a much cherished and quite valuable item (over £300) on eBay.

I offered both standard 1st class postage and for an extra £4 Special Delivery Next Day which means the item is tracked, signed for and insured.

I even added a disclaimer to the ad along the lines of that I can't be held responsible for lost/damaged items in the post and that I recommend where possible that the purchaser utilises the postal service that best protects their purchase.

Anyway, the person who bought the item spent well over £300 but only paid for 1st class postage. I packaged it up and sent it off and guess what? It's not arrived!!!! icon_evil.gif

In future, anything over £36 goes Special Delivery only, first class won't be an option.

You've got 1500 feedback? And you despatch an expensive item by 1st class post?

I'd stick to buying in future if I were you. DOH!
Exclamation and question marks - ONE exclamation mark or question mark is sufficient to exclaim or ask about something. More than one just makes you look/sound like a prat.

I am sure some people are, if this is real I would like to think the person was more naive than stupid.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

If they put the post disclaimer on the bottom that is pretty naive:rolleyes:

No, not a wind-up post sadly but a genuine mistake.

Due to working long days (and sometimes nights too) and having no access to a Post Office in my lunch break (I work in the middle of nowhere at a military base) I asked a neighbour to post my items for me when he was in town. He sadly forgot to send this one in particular by recorded mail and sod's law being what it is....this is the one gone AWOL.

BTW, I wouldn't dream of closing my eBay/PayPal account to escape my responsibilities. With 100% on over 1500 transactions I pride myself on my honesty. This one's gone pear-shaped due to an oversight but if the law says I must refund the seller then that's what I shall do.

How long is acceptable to allow Royal Mail a chance to deliver the goods (considering the Xmas build up is beginning) before I have to make the refund?

Think you could try telling the buyer that as they did not ask for special delivery, you will not be refunding them, it was thier choice not to insure- know thats not the truth- that if they want to claim the cash back they can, but personally.

I would try this first and wait to be told by them that they want the refund. Any negative feefdback (which you would likley get anyway) could be replied to (on the same page as the feedback is on) with something along the lines of "well you said you specificly didn't want insurance, this is your error, not mine.

I would rather they went through the rigmarol of going through paypal then me happily giving back the refund if you do think the buyer is trying to get one over on you- if they contacted you within a week, I would worry- most buyers would leave a good 2 weeks incase of delays before querying, but if you have had an email within a few days, its likely they have had te item received and straight away think "hmmm, now how can I claim the cash back from this...."

Also its a criminal offence to claim back the price of the item when it was actually delivered- if they find out it has been, its a crime. It could help to mention this to the buyer, let them know they will set the police on to it. (They wont but could make himrethink things).

Just to add, if the item was jewelery, DONOT tell Royal Mail when making a claim- they have a weird catch 22 where they will not pay out for jewellery. The women told me this in the post office as I sent out some jewellery to someone, I decided to call it clothes insted!

You have to wait 21 days before you can make a claim with the Royal Mail so don't need to refund the buyer till then either.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
