Quality laptops will not over-heat (just randomly): the fan should kick in intermittently to prevent over-heating:)BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

I'll avoid addressing the stupidity of anyone who could post the self-contradiction that a laptop will "not" (sic) overheat but will just overheat randomly. I leave it to you to ask yourself whether it would be sensible to entrust the well-being of your expensive laptop to the advice of anyone who could write something like that.
Depending upon what external devices laptops are being asked to support (in particular the size of a monitor), the task(s) they are being asked to perform and the temperature of the local environment in which they find themselves, even quality laptops can suffer from heat problems.
Moreover, the hotter they run, the shorter the components within them last.
So, keeping heat down extends the life of the laptop (indeed, any computer).
The whole subject is addressed in some detail * HERE * and, in regard to laptop coolers, * HERE *.
There's also the fact that if a laptop cooler running more or less silently results in your laptop's internal fans not running loudly - indeed, barely at all - there is a benefit to be derived both in terms of noise and in wear on your laptop's fans.
The first step towards taking the subject seriously is to download (free) a Temperature Monitoring application or utility that can tell you what temperatures are being reached in critical parts of your laptop. You could Google for ones that run under Windows but for Macs (both desktops and laptops) I use Temperature Monitor.
Once that's installed you can then observe definitively what works, and what doesn't, in lowering the temperatures within your laptop.
Personally, I use a Zalman NC2000 cooler under my main laptop - it's very quiet and it does make a difference.
- Post Edit -
Before somebody has the charity to call me a fool for putting a MacBook Pro laptop with a solid lower case containing no vents on to a Zalman NC200 fan-equipped cooler, I should add that I have placed a one centimetre thick cardboard tube horizontally underneath the back of the ProBook, so that the cold air pushed upwards by the fans in the cooler, though its holes, strikes the bottom of the ProBook's casing and then exits sideways and backwards. Monitoring the temperatures inside the ProBook shows this to be effective and you can play about with the exact positioning to see what works best.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional0 -

You can remove your Battery, however you'll find if its left out for a while then the performance can be affected. To prevent this then replace the battery once a week whilst you have the Laptop switched off but plugged in. So the Battery gets a regular recharge.
There are Laptop Coolers that you can purchase, there are a lot on ebay for a small cost.0 -
