You need mains power for these. The LG GSA-E50, as in my suggestion, is USB powered.0 -
Depending upon the power requirement of the drive and upon the specification of the netbook, a drive with no mains power facility might well require the use of two USB2 sockets and a Y-lead in order even to read a disc.
If you wanted to use other USB2 devices at the same time (e.g. a mouse, a USB2 memory stick, etc.) this could be a problem. You'd then need to use a USB2 hub - and that would probably need to be mains powered...
Whatever its size and form-factor, you'd certainly be wise to purchase a drive that can use mains power if necessary.
If you're going to burn a CD or DVD, it's also best to run the computer itself off mains electricity while you're doing it.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

you'd now be better off living in one.

If either Leopard or aliEnRIK can find even a single review of the drive that backs up their claims, I will accept it.
The drive needs one USB port and there have been no reports of disc failure.
On the contrary, it has glowing reviews most everywhere.
Apart from this.... an additional adapter can be obtained if necessary
The point of a netbook is that it is small and portable, so how does it make sense to have a large rectangular drive that needs mains power to even begin to work?
Now how about you become less boring sticks-in-the-mud?
Sheesh....0 -

Sheesh....
Dimmie,
With your customary paranoia and foul manners, you have, as usual, fired off at half-c0ck. (With a load of c0ck.)
Where did either aliEnRIK or I ever suggest that your recommended LG GSA-E50 was inappropriate for a netbook? Nowhere.
We were both making general points.
What, with your customary stupidity, you have failed to grasp is that however good the drive itself may be, whether it will need power from two USB2 ports or only one will depend on the hardware capabilities of the netbook to which it is attached - not the bloody drive itself.
With your customary lack of research you appear to have missed the following words from the manual (available online) of the LG GSA-E50N:
• The Rewriter may get its power from the USB power. All systems may not meet USB power requirements and full performance may not be achieved.
In this case, connect to the included USB power cable (DC-jack type.). Which plugs into...a second USB port on the computer.
If either Leopard or aliEnRIK can find even a single review of the drive that backs up their claims, I will accept it.
The drive needs one USB port...
In all your petulant, self-indulgent tirades on here, I have never seen any indication that you have ever actually used, let alone possess, a netbook yourself. Have you? Do you? Or are you just, as usual, pontificating on something about which you are entirely ignorant?
I don't know about aliEnRIK, but I do own a netbook. And I tried it with a (Hewlett-Packard) portable DVD drive. And that did need a Y-lead and two USB2 ports to power it satisfactorily.
This was why I made my general remark.
And since the LG GSA-E50 could be run off a tiny, mains-powered, USB2 hub using two USB2 ports if necessary (which is what i did with the HP portable drive I borrowed) - where does "a large rectangular drive" ever need to enter into this apart from in your rantings?
The point aliEnRIK was making, and with which I would agree, is that for burning a DVD you'd be well advised to use mains electricity to power the netbook anyway. And if you're going to use mains power for the netbook, you might as well use it for the external DVD drive as well, if it has that ability.
Perhaps if you owned (do you?) a netbook yourself you would have a greater understanding of the practicalities of using them. And also that, although a USB2 DVD drive may be necessary to do some things with them, those things may not necessarily need to be done on the move. Not when a USB2 memory stick can hold 8 GB. On to which you can put the contents of a DVD. And which will definitely need only one of the netbook's USB2 ports.
You'll note, if you weren't too "bored" to read the original posting properly, that the OP made no mention of form-factor, nor of independence from mains power - the plea was merely for advice about "a DVD burner for a netbook" . Many people will be perfectly happy with a "large rectangular drive that needs mains power to even begin to work" if they can leave it at home and need only a tiny USB2 memory stick that consumes only a fraction of any rectangular drive's power requirements when they are out and about. I am.
With your customary arrogance, you bragged: "If either Leopard or aliEnRIK can find even a single review of the drive that backs up their claims, I will accept it."
Never mind a review, I've proved you wrong from your chosen drive's very own manual.
So, I call your bluff - accept it.
You now owe both aliEnRIK and me a well-deserved apology.
Or are you going to demonstrate yet again to everybody that you are too vain and emotionally insecure to ever admit it when you have made a mistake by finding it too "boring" to think before you sounded off?
Or that it's too "boring" for you to offer an apology when you owe one?
Hope so. All your perceived army of adoring fans is watching...
Let yourself down (again), Donnie. :grouphug:

Where's the review? I won't waste my time reading your claptrap.
My recommendation is entirely suitable. If you have amore suitable suugestion, by all means, post it. I'm sure that the OP would be interested.
As to owning particular pieces of equipment...I don't need to do so. I have free access to test whatever equipment or software that I desire.
I scannned your post for the review that I requested. As it didn't appear to be there, I quickly realised that your post wasn't worth reading.
The OP has the best possible solution and you are a wastrel.0 -
Leopard just pointed out a FACT thats written in the ACTUAL manual of the LG GSA-E50N:
your saying its irrelevant?:idea:0
