Bare averages, without other statistical qualifiers, are very misleading. A distribution would be interesting to see, and SD values too. How are the figures skewed? Quoting averages for the whole country also hides regional differences, which will vary greatly with climate.

The highest ranked members of the carbon clubs tend not to use any gas or electric at all for heating and instead use wood, coal or oil which isn't measured in imeasure.

And 2nd homes in Spain that aren't occupied!
  • Just to show how averages can give a false impression:

"99.97% of people in Britain have more than the average number of legs". ;)
  • wow, i seem to be using a bit more electric then most of you, got my annual statement
it says Gas 24,528.06kWh and electric 7,185.63kWh, thats for Nov 09-Nov10..
4 of us in a 3 bed semi..
  • 6990 kWh Electricity and 23,500 KWh Gas

These numbers are from the bills not the meter readings but sometimes I think it's all just made up!

    Carbon emission too low?
I find it helps to burn tyres in the garden.
If it takes a man a week to walk to walk a fortnight how long does it take a fly with tackity boots on to walk through a barrel of treacle?
  • Hi
ive been reading the forums on typical average electricity usage, my parents are pensioners and the company they get there electricity off are saying that their average yrly usage is over 17.000kwh units from reading other posts does any one agree with me that there meter could be faulty! they have a 1 bedroom bungalow...i run a 3 bedroom house and my usage for this yr was just under 4000kwh...any advice on what to do would be appreciated :)
  • Reviving this old thread as I haven't been able to find a website with stats for typical electricity-only household consumption (ideally with different categories, like house size, number of people etc.). I have a feeling our consumption is too high although we (think we) are very energy efficient (and most of the time away from home) and I would like to compare it to average/median figures.
  • Anyone know where I can find energy costs in p/kWh? All the sites I find - including this one - give annualised figures that are based on assumptions that are unstated or don't apply to me. I have an offer of 11.27 p/kWh and I want to know if it's a good deal.

MSE - please can you publish a table of energy costs of different suppliers and tariffs in p/kWh. Thanks!

There are literally thousands of kWh rates. Hundreds of tariffs, and 11 different geographic areas.

Even if that were possible, the kWh prices don't tell the whole story as there are a multitude of differing discounts for dual fuel, methods of payment etc. Not to mention the different prices for the tier system or daily standing charge. So the lowest kWh charge is not a measure of the cheapest tariff.

In any case all the information you require is available on the comparison websites. Go to www.energyhelpline.com and enter your postcode. Enter any kWh consumption figure and it will list every available tariff. You can then get the kWh price plus all of the other information required to calculate your charge.
