my usage for past year with storage heaters as I dont have gas supply here is
    Day---2348
    Night--12458
I have all energy saving bulbs,Double glazing, cavity wall insulation, roof insulation and also exterior cladding and still find it hard to keep L/Room at 70f
Its a 2 bed mid terrace and one problem is neighbours either side dont heat their houses as they cant afford to smoke and go too pub then
  • Mine is pretty much like chas1937
my usage for year with storage heaters and no gas supply is
    Day - 1345
    night - 10206
There are two adults and no children, We have electric cooker, chest freezer, electric shower, (we do not store hot water) energy saving bulbs, some double glazing, thick stone walls, two bedrooms (in old single storey cottage)
we are very carefull with the electric usage and read the meter every week. We do not have any other form of heating other than the storage heaters and our house is certainly not very warm, but warm enough for us. We tend to keep ourselves warm, rather than the house.
look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.

Actually, it does not. It's gas for an average household that has a supply of gas.

The electricity statistic is also compromised because it's a mixture of households that use electricity for heating and those that don't. Hence it's not representative of either.

If you have a gas supply, then you'd expect to buy (on average) 16000kWh of gas plus less than 4800kWh of electricity.

If you use electricity for heating and have no gas, you'd expect to buy much more than 4800kWh of electricity.

So you see that even though these statistics have the authority of the government's National Statistics organisation, they don't really answer the OP's question.

Not directly, but given that the figure for gas will be primarily used for heating the home (at somewhere between 90+% - the figure for condensing boilers - and 78% efficiency) and secondarily for cooking (stoves are about 90% efficient, but I've not been able to find any numbers for ovens), we can assume that, all things being equal, an average all-electric household will use somewhere between 78% and 99% of 16000kWh for heating and cooking (since electric heating is 100% efficient at the point of usage), giving a range of 12480kWh and 15840kWh.
  • my annual consumtion in kwh for a 5apt 4 bed 3 storey house is 16,000 for gas and 9,000 for electricity. gas central heating, electric cooking, elecvtric shower, new build house, with loft insulation, draft proofing etc. But there is 5 of us living here! my annual bills are £950 for electricity and £550 for gas, i am with edf energy online v4 tariff and i have not found anyone cheaper than them in the past 2 years!
  • Gas 20500 Kwh
    Electricity 3300 Kwh

    Hope this helps :)

what size of house you basing this on?
    i have a 5apt (4bed) my gas is 16,000 and electricity is 9,000.

Does anyone know there kWh usage per year and what a typical average is, this is just for a house with electricity and no gas.

you can work out your kwh usage per year by getting your last 4 bills
and adding your providers figures (kwh) all together. or if you have not been in the property for atleast a year take 1 bill and multiply by 4 and that would give you a rough figure, although some companies show you what your usage is weekly like edf. hope this helps:confused:
  • You should know that EDF online version 6 (effective 18th December) is cheaper than versions 1,2,3 & 4. Version 5 was even cheaper but sadly nolonger available.
Believe it or not none of the comparision website will tell you this, unless you tell them you are a none EDF customer, in which case version 6 comes top of the list.

http://www.carbonindependent.org/sources_home_energy.htm says 4800 kWh of electricity and 16000 kWh of gas for an average household. It has other figures for households that are larger and smaller than average.

I think those figures are misleading.

As I understand it the correct figure for dual fuel households is 3,300 elect and 20,500 gas.

The 4,800kWh figure includes all houses, including those who use electricity for heating, i.e. do not use gas/oil/solid fuel for heating & hot water.

Similarly the gas figure of 16,000kWh includes all houses, not just those with gas.

E.G Take 100 houses of which only 80 have a gas supply. If the 80 houses use 20,000kWh each, the average is 16,000kWh.
  • 'Average' consumption is basically a load of !!!! and bull...unless you surveyed EVERY hosue in the UK and then did the maths. I live in a 4 bed extended semi with 5 occupants (I seem to have 'acquired' a daughter I never had, my eldest son's girlfriend who clearly much prefers living here than she does her 'home', lol) and we use 15,000 gas and 6000 leccy. So, it could be said we are not using enough gas but using far too much leccy. Oh well..
    Call me Carmine....

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Our gas consumption for the past 4 quarters came to about 26,000kwh but that was due to the heating being on full heat during the winter period, this winter we've turned the thermostat down (old fashioned one measured by 4 bars, not temperature!).

I don't think our gas will be any less for the next year with our newborn baby here now, the missus is at home all day with myself (made redundant!) so it's used a fair bit at the moment along with the electric with the tv on and kettle to warm the bottles of milk up.

Our average consumption over last 4 quarters was:

    Gas - 26,300 kwh
    Elec - 3168 kwh

We have an old style electric meter too so we can't utilise Economy 7 and so are just on the standard dual fuel tariff.
